What to Expect

Tesla's Gulf Coast Lithium Refinery is seeking an experienced Piping Designer to provide technical drafting and design support to the Small Capital Projects organization for our novel flowsheet. This role owns the creation, revision, and management of accurate engineering drawings and documentation that enable safe, reliable execution of small capital projects, equipment upgrades, and process modifications-ensuring mechanical integrity, process safety compliance, and long-term asset reliability in a fast-paced and innovative environment.

What You'll Do
  • Develop and maintain high-quality 2D/3D drawings including P&IDs, piping and instrumentation diagrams, general arrangement (GA) layouts, piping isometrics, equipment detail drawings, and civil/structural plans using AutoCAD Plant 3D and CADWorx, for process piping circuits, autoclaves, calciners, pressure filters, crystallizers, slurry pumps, and solids handling systems
  • Support the full lifecycle of small capital projects and site modifications by preparing as-built drawings, redline markups, and design packages that integrate with project engineering deliverables, ensuring alignment with first-principles engineering
  • Execute Management of Change (MOC) drawing updates and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) documentation packages in accordance with the site PSM program (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119), maintaining version control and drawing accuracy for all process and mechanical modifications
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Project Engineers, Reliability Engineering, Process Safety, Maintenance, and Procurement teams to incorporate reliability enhancements, corrosion monitoring points, and predictive maintenance features into project designs
  • Perform field verification and laser scanning support during outages and project execution to ensure drawings reflect actual plant conditions and resolve discrepancies in real time
  • Manage the site's intelligent P&ID database and drawing library using Plant 3D, applying standardized templates, layering conventions, and Tesla engineering standards to drive consistency, reduce errors, and accelerate project delivery
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design and drafting workflows, including automation scripts, BIM integration, and digital twin initiatives that support outage planning and small capital project efficiency

What You'll Bring
  • Degree or technical certification in Engineering Technology, Drafting, CAD Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of progressive drafting/design experience in chemical processing, hydrometallurgy, mineral processing, or heavy industrial facilities
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Plant 3D (or equivalent 3D plant design software), with demonstrated ability to produce intelligent P&IDs, isometrics, and equipment models to ASME, API, and industry standards
  • Working knowledge of PSM-regulated drawing practices, MOC/PSSR processes, and industrial codes (piping specifications, pressure vessel details, and safety instrumented systems)
  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced, commissioning-to-steady-state refinery environment while collaborating effectively with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver accurate, on-time design packages
