Job Description

Coordinates and supervises reader and reference operations for Special Collections and Rare Books at Ellis Library. The position is responsible for supervision of Special Collections' reading room and its library information assistants, and for providing quality customer service to Special Collections patrons.

Key Job Duties:
- Supervises and coordinates all operations in Special Collections research and reader operations, including assigning tasks to library specialists and student workers, directing standards of work, and adhering to reading room workflows, to ensure research requests are met in a timely manner.
- Trains and supervises all personnel in the reading room. This includes approving timesheets for part-time library specialists and student workers.
- Provides Tier 1 and 1+ research services to patrons via phone, email, and LibAnswers, while escalating Tier 2 and 3 requests to department librarians.
- Approves research appointments in LibCal, retrieving and preparing materials for patrons.
- In collaboration with the Instruction & Exhibitions Librarian, retrieves materials for scheduled instruction sessions, tours, and other events, as appropriate. Organizes materials for each course and is responsible for following Special Collections circulation workflows.
- Works with Preservation Librarian and/or Head of Special Collections on liaising with departments like cataloguing and digital initiatives, when appropriate.
- Conducts inventory of the collections at regular intervals in Ellis Library with library specialists and/or student workers as appropriate. Responsible for stack maintenance, such as reshelving and shifting. This position may also play a part in moving materials out of collection areas for transfer to UMLD.
- Coordinates all monitoring and collection of environmental data for Special Collections storage areas. This includes collecting the data and/or formulating reports, in collaboration with the Preservation Librarian.
- Other duties as assigned.

Shift

Typically, Mon-Fri 8am-5pm

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

- Two or more years of work experience in a library setting.
- Experience working in academic libraries, with a focus on special collections and archives
- Strong experience with Microsoft Office 365. Familiarity with integrated library systems, such as LibApps, EBSCO's FOLIO, ArchivesSpace, and Omeka.
- Detailed-oriented with familiarity with project management.

NOTE:
- May require the ability to obtain and place materials on shelves at ground level and on shelves up to nine feet in height using step stools, ladders, lifts, or other devices.
- May require the ability to identify call numbers where lighting may be compromised, on shelves at ground level and on shelves up to nine feet in height using step stools, ladders, or other devices.
- May require the ability to move materials up to 40 lbs. in weight.
- May require the ability to transport several books at one time and/or move boxes of books (up to 50 lbs.).

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $17.40-$23.85 per hour

Grade: GGS-7
