Job Description

We have an opening for aSoftware Developer.You will work on multi-disciplinary teams in a dynamic environment that encourages support of the academic research community while focusing on problems of interest to LLNL and DOE programs. This position is in the National Ignition Facility Computing (NIFC) Division within the Computing Directorate.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide computer science and software development support using industry standard software development practices and modern programming languages and operating systems.
  • Develop a range of applications supporting NIF operations by understanding, developing, and maintaining the database objects that support it.
  • Participate in the requirements definition, analysis, design, implementation, debugging, testing, and optimization of computer programs in support of the National Ignition Facility.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives, functioning as an effective team member on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Engage other developers frequently to share relevant knowledge, opinions, and recommendations.
  • Design, implement, deploy, and maintain software systems using object-oriented analysis, design, and programming techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  • Provide solutions to moderately complex problems involving largely identifiable factors which include automation, application improvements, and daily operations.
  • Respond to and resolve operational issues identified by software users.
  • Lead informal design reviews of application software changes and enhancements

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Skilled in all aspects of software project life cycle: feasibility, requirements, design, implementation, integration, test and deployment.
  • Experience and knowledge of database schema design and SQL coding, or full stack development experience using Python or JavaScript/Typescript in database intensive applications.
  • Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities and meet deadlines that are important to project success.
  • Experience approaching difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity.
  • Effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of personnel with the ability to work independently in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to prepare, present, and document technical information.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • Broad experience providing innovative approaches and applying new technologies to broadly defined tasks and projects.
  • Broad experience applying effective analytical and problem-solving skills to moderately complex problems.
  • Comprehensive analytical skills with the ability to decipher accurate requirements from customer interactions and troubleshoot data integrity issues.
  • Proficient experience developing software applications with Oracle Application Express (APEX) and/or Python and/or JavaScript/Typescript.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Broad experience with Oracle Application Express (APEX), and other technologies, such as, CSS, HTML and NodeJS.
  • Experience and knowledge of database schema design with some experience procedural SQL coding.
  • Experience identifying data integrity issues and errors, conducting root cause analysis, implementing corrective actions, and applying problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with container computing frameworks such as Kubernetes.

Pay Range

$121,830 - $154,500 Yearly at the SES.1 level

$146,340 - $185,544 Yearly at the SES.2 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
