Job Description

Accounts Payable Supervisor

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Department: Shared Services - Accounts Payable

Reports To: Director of Shared Services

Position Summary

TMS International is seeking an experienced Accounts Payable Supervisor to lead the Accounts Payable function for our Performance Materials Group (PMG). This role is responsible for overseeing the timely and accurate processing of vendor payments across the United States and Canada while ensuring compliance with company policies and internal controls.

The successful candidate will manage a team of five Accounts Payable professionals and serve as a key business partner to operations, procurement, treasury, and finance teams. The position requires strong leadership, process improvement capabilities, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment supporting transportation and logistics-related transactions including truck, rail, barge, vessel, and freight payments.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of five Accounts Payable employees.
  • Manage workload distribution to ensure timely processing of invoices and payments.
  • Identify training opportunities and support employee development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement.

Accounts Payable Operations

  • Oversee end-to-end Accounts Payable processes for PMG operations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
  • Ensure timely and accurate payments related to:
  • Truck transportation
  • Railcar shipments
  • Barge movements
  • Vessel transactions
  • Freight and logistics services
  • Review and approve payment batches including ACH, wire transfers, checks, and other electronic payment methods.
  • Monitor aging reports and resolve payment issues in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with Treasury to ensure proper cash management and payment execution.

Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to company policies, accounting procedures, and internal controls.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing requested documentation and explanations.
  • Review vendor master changes and payment method updates to mitigate fraud risk.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable tax, regulatory, and financial reporting requirements.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation, standardization, and process redesign.
  • Develop and maintain departmental procedures and training materials.
  • Support system enhancements and future AP technology initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Operations, Procurement, Treasury, Accounting, and Shared Services teams to resolve invoice and payment issues.
  • Serve as a primary escalation point for complex vendor and payment matters.
  • Assist with month-end close activities, accruals, reconciliations, and reporting as required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive Accounts Payable experience.
  • Experience supervising or leading Accounts Payable staff.
  • Strong understanding of Accounts Payable processes, controls, and best practices.
  • Experience processing high-volume transactions in a multi-location environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in transportation, logistics, manufacturing, industrial services, or commodity-related industries.
  • Experience with U.S. and Canadian payment processing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar ERP systems.
  • Prior experience managing payment runs involving freight, trucking, or logistics vendors.
  • Continuous improvement or process automation experience.

Accounts Payable Supervisor

  • 3+ years of Accounts Payable experience.
  • 1-3 years of direct supervisory or team lead experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage day-to-day AP operations and staff performance.
