Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Under close supervision, Custodian I performs routine and specialized custodial duties in assigned area(s), including floor care maintenance. The position requires extensive physical labor, adherence to safety protocols, and regular use of commercial cleaning products and equipment.

This role works collaboratively across LSC campuses on special projects, recommend process improvement, and implement best practices in standard operating procedures (SOPs) across functional units.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Cleans assigned areas to standards set by the college and supervisor
  2. Duties include but are not limited to: dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing windows, cleaning and restocking restrooms, and emptying trash
  3. Operates floor care equipment, including:
    1. Low-speed floor machines for top scrubbing or stripping floors
    2. Grout cleaning equipment in restrooms
    3. Carpet extractors for deep cleaning and carpet restoration
    4. Application of floor sealers and wax
    5. High-speed buffers to harden and polish wax finishes
  4. Assists with setup and breakdown of tables, chairs, and rooms for events
  5. Maintains safety standards at all times, including proper chemical handling, safe equipment usage, and reporting unsafe conditions
  6. Completes annual training on hazardous chemicals, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other safety requirements
  7. Responds to emergency cleaning or maintenance needs
  8. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in using custodial equipment, including floor cleaning machinery
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established cleaning procedures
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to reach, push, pull, bend, and stand for prolonged periods

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Manual dexterity to operate custodial tools and equipment
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and negligible force frequently or constantly, to lift, carry, push, or pull objects
  • Ability to handle equipment with full hand and maintain coordination for detailed tasks
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify maintenance needs and ensure safety
  • Ability to receive and interpret detailed oral instructions
  • Frequent reaching, extending, and repetitive motion of hands and arms

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Uses various custodial equipment including brooms, mops, vacuums, and other cleaning tools
  • Interacts with internal and external contacts as necessary to carry out job duties
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with regular exposure to dust, dirt, and other environmental elements
  • May regularly travel to different LSC locations
  • May be fully reassigned to other LSC locations if necessary
  • May need to work weekends and untraditional hours if necessary
  • This position is classified as an essential employee, which means the individual may be required to report to work during college closures or emergencies to support recovery and reopening efforts

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic Certified Cleaning Technician (BCCT) or Advanced Certified Cleaning Technician (ACCT) certification
Salary

Hiring salary range is: $33,540 - $38,571

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education. Should you receive an offer of employment from Lone Star College, the resume submitted in the application process will be utilized to calculate your salary offer. The information outlined below will provide the Office of Human Resources everything needed to determine an accurate starting salary.
