Overview

The COLUMBIA I&C & AC Power department is looking for a highly motivated Test Engineer. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a new group and support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery of the first of class SSBN 826 COLUMBIA, the Nation's #1 defense priority, on the front lines of engineering.

This once in a career opportunity will be challenging and rewarding as the COLUMBIA Waterfront team supports the delivery of modules from Quonset Point to Groton and other shipbuilding partner locations.

This is a new position which will be located primarily in Quonset Point RI, with frequent travel and possible future seat location of Groton, CT.

With the primary responsibility of proactively supporting COLUMBIA Class construction efforts in the Quonset Point shipyard and eventual responsibilities in the Groton shipyard, the Construction Support Engineering team will provide direct support to the shipyard trades and support organizations to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous completion of construction activities in a manner that results in delivery of ships consistent with the design intent.

The position will collaborate frequently with the existing D429 COLUMBIA I&C and AC Power engineering groups, as well as Waterfront Engineering, Planning, Operations, Ship's Management, Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), and PMS397, to act as the primary COLUMBIA Electrical Systems Directorate engineering interface for the Quonset Point shipyard and later the Groton shipyard.

D429 COLUMBIA Class Construction Support Group responsibilities will include the following:

    Provide engineering oversight and assistance to trade personnel
  • Evaluate emergent shipyard issues that arise during construction and rapidly develop
    technically acceptable resolutions
  • Interpret design, drawing, and specification requirements
  • Providing direction and evaluation to trades via disposition of CNs and TIR UNSATs
  • Support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery activities for COLUMBIA Class
  • Provide surveillance of manufacturing, inspection, and testing of material in the shipyard
  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering evaluations
  • Facilitate implementation of the design, lessons learned, and process improvements
  • Facilitate discipline specific knowledge transfer to the construction support engineering team
  • Coordinate engagement of design and engineering SMEs in the construction sequence
  • The candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Candidate must be highly motivated and be able to perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in a team environment
  • Work with Design and NTO for Test Equipment Drawing (TED) development, including creating Scopes of Work and reviewing TEDs

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

Qualifications

Required:

  • 4+ years Navy experience
  • High school diploma

Preferred:

  • Nuclear Propulsion Plant experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree
  • Project planning and management experience
  • Reactor Plant Operator and/or Electric Plant Operator experience
