About This Role

Kansas State University is conducting a strategic cluster hire of four IT Directors to provide visionary leadership across academic, administrative, library, and enterprise systems environments. This unified recruitment process allows candidates to be considered for multiple IT Director roles based on their experience, strengths, and interests-all with a single application.

These positions collectively play a critical role in advancing institutional priorities, enabling innovation, and ensuring secure, reliable, and forward-looking technology services across the organization.

Selected candidates will be placed into one of several leadership areas, which may include:



  • Academic / College IT Leadership





  • K-State Libraries Technology Services





  • Administrative & Enterprise IT





  • Enterprise Systems (ERP & Applications)



All IT Directors work in close partnership with IT leadership and unit stakeholders, often with dual accountability toIT and a college/unit leader (e.g., Dean or AVP or VP).

Position Summaries:

IT Directors develop and execute strategic technology plans, oversee IT operations, and lead high-performing teams supporting a diverse portfolio of systems, services, and users. These leaders ensure alignment with institutional policies and drive innovation through a future-focused approach to technology.

Depending on placement, responsibilities may include oversight of:



  • Academic college or departmental IT services



  • Library systems and digital scholarship technologies





  • Administrative and enterprise applications





  • ERP, CRM, and integrated University systems



Key Responsibilities



  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for IT systems, services, and staff



  • Develop and implement technology roadmaps aligned with institutional goals





  • Ensure security, compliance, and policy adherence across systems and data





  • Lead, mentor, and manage IT teams (including managers, staff, and student employees)





  • Partner with academic, research, and administrative stakeholders to deliver IT solutions and systems





  • Oversee budgets, resource allocation, and business case development





  • Drive innovation through evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies





  • Foster collaboration acrossIT and distributed units





  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences





  • Manage support into state-of-the-art classrooms and conference room spaces



Specialized Focus Areas:

Depending on assignment, additional expectations may include:

K-State Libraries IT



  • Support integrated library systems and platforms (e.g., Alma, FOLIO, ArchivesSpace, Open Journal, Islandora)





  • Experience working with library data formats and standards including MARC, XML, and JSON





  • Partner with researchers and faculty on digital scholarship initiatives





  • Manage library data standards, repositories, and discovery tools





  • Experience overseeing an integrated library system, discovery tools, interlibrary loan electronic infrastructure, online public catalog, and user authentication services





  • Data migrations and data repository support



Enterprise / Administrative Unit/ College



  • Lead IT services for major administrative units





  • Oversee complex organizational systems





  • Serve on unit leadership teams



Enterprise Systems



  • Direct ERP (Finance, HR, Student) and CRM platforms





  • Manage system integrations, performance, and application lifecycle





  • Lead large-scale implementations and cross-functional initiatives

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Requires a high school diploma (or equivalent) and ten years of relevant experience. Requirements may be met through a combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in computer science, information technology or related field.
  • Experience in technology troubleshooting, assisting, and training.
  • Experience administering servers in small to medium sized server environments.
  • Experience managing IT staff members responsible for providing front-line support for hardware and departmental IT systems.
  • Experience conducting and directing research into IT issues and products.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience building business case scenarios and working with technology allocation and budgets.
  • Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Proven analytical, evaluative and problem-solving abilities.
