The Trowbridge Lab at The Jackson Laboratory focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of hematopoietic stem cell aging and drivers of blood cancers in the context of aging. The lab leverages genetically engineered and genetically diverse mouse models and in vivo cellular transplant assays, flow cytometry, single cell -omics, spatial and lineage tracing technologies, CRISPR screens, and immunology techniques to advance discoveries that impact human health.

Position Summary

The Research Lab Manager plays a critical role in driving the success of the Trowbridge Lab's research program. This individual will oversee daily lab operations, lead, manage and mentor research staff, work collaboratively with lab members and internal/external collaborators to execute experiments, and contribute directly to experimental design, execution, and analysis.

This position requires a highly organized, collaborative, and innovative scientist and manager who can operate independently while ensuring alignment with the Principal Investigator's research goals. The Lab Manager will serve as a key liaison across JAX teams and help ensure research projects progress efficiently and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead lab operations: Oversee daily laboratory activities, ensuring efficient workflows and compliance with institutional standards.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance: Responsible for generating, filing, updating and amending laboratory safety plans, animal and biosafety protocols, documenting lab member trainings, and other tasks needed for compliance with institutional regulatory requirements.
  • Supervise and mentor staff: Directly manage, train and evaluate laboratory research assistants and technicians; lead in hiring, career development, and performance management of these laboratory members; provide daily and weekly schedules to align with experimental needs of laboratory members.
  • Drive research progress: Provide experimental support to lab members, internal and external collaborators. Design, troubleshoot, and execute experiments; analyze and communicate data.
  • Coordinate research initiatives: Manage mouse colony needs and experimental timelines to ensure alignment of multiple research projects.
  • Advance scientific innovation: Stay current with emerging technologies and integrate new methodologies into lab work.
  • Contribute to scholarly output: Assist in preparing grant applications, manuscripts, and technical reports.
  • Maintain collaboration: Interface with internal teams and external collaborators to keep projects on track.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (advanced degree preferred or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in a research laboratory environment.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Strong background in mouse genetics, molecular biology, or a related field.

  • Must be a self-motivated, team-oriented, patient and disciplined problem solver and solution builder.
  • Proven experience mentoring and developing research staff.
  • Strong data analysis, organization, and scientific writing skills.
  • Experience supporting grant writing and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Demonstrated effective communication, collaboration, and project management abilities.

Pay Range: $65,018 - $108,857 per year, depending upon experience
