About the Role:

The Head Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Coach reports directly to the Associate Athletics Director-Operations & Event Management and is responsible for the organization and administration of the men's and women's track & field and cross-country programs in accordance with the rules and regulations of the University, Horizon League and NCAA.

The Head Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Coach must have a commitment to developing a competitive NCAA Division I track & field and cross-country program, while maintaining an emphasis on the academic success of the student-athlete. They will also be expected to assist in administering the program in a manner that promotes the health, safety and welfare of the student-athletes.

Compliance with NCAA rules is of the utmost importance at Northern Kentucky University. As a member of the athletics department staff, it is expected that the Head Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Coach will have a full understanding of the NCAA rules that pertain to the position. It is also expected that the Head Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Coach will comply with all NCAA rules and if he/she becomes aware, or have reasonable cause to believe, that a violation of a rule has occurred he/she will immediately report it to the Director of Athletics or his/her designee.

Primary Responsibilities

Plan, coordinate, and oversee all in-season and out-of-season practices and training sessions, including team and individual workouts designed to maximize student-athlete performance, with an emphasis on the development of athletic skills necessary to compete successfully at the NCAA Division I level.

Develop and execute meet strategies and competition plans, including video analysis, opponent evaluation, and scouting report preparation.

Recruit and retain qualified student-athletes in accordance with NCAA regulations, conference policies, institutional academic standards, and University admission requirements.

Complete and maintain all compliance documentation and reporting requirements as directed by the Athletics Compliance Office and in accordance with NCAA, conference, and institutional policies.

Manage and monitor the Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country program budget to ensure fiscal responsibility and adherence to allocated financial resources.

Participate in and support fundraising, alumni engagement, and community outreach initiatives for the Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country program and the Department of Athletics, while actively representing the University within campus and surrounding communities.

Collaborate with the assigned Strength and Conditioning Coach to develop and coordinate comprehensive strength and conditioning programs that support student-athlete health, performance, and injury prevention.

Hire, supervise, mentor, and evaluate Assistant Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country coaches to support the overall success and development of the program.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience required.

Coaching & Program Leadership

  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and developing student-athletes at the collegiate level

  • Experience managing all aspects of a track & field / cross country program, including training, competition scheduling, and staff supervision

  • Ability to lead a comprehensive program (multiple event areas, large roster management)

Compliance & NCAA Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, with a commitment to maintaining compliance

  • Experience with recruiting regulations, eligibility standards, and academic accountability expectations

Student-Athlete Development

  • Commitment to supporting student-athlete academic success, retention, and well-being

  • Experience mentoring student-athletes and fostering a positive team culture

Recruiting

  • Proven ability to recruit within assigned budget and geographic areas

  • Experience evaluating talent across multiple disciplines (sprints, distance, field events, etc.)

Administrative / Operational Experience

  • Budget management experience

  • Ability to coordinate travel, equipment, and meet logistics

  • Experience supervising assistant coaches, grad assistants, or support staff

Collaboration & External Engagement

  • Ability to work effectively with athletics administration, faculty, and campus partners

  • Experience engaging alumni, donors, and community stakeholders (often important at NKU scale programs)
