HDR is looking for an NBIS Bridge Inspection Team Leader to work as part of the Transportation Business Group in South Carolina. This position may be based out of any of our South Carolina offices: Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, or Fort Mill. The NBIS Bridge Inspection Team Leader will conduct the inspection and analyses of bridges throughout South Carolina. They will lead a team to complete initial, routine, in-depth, and fracture-critical inspections of bridges and other miscellaneous structures for Agencies (federal, state, local) and private owners using National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and other relevant standards. The Bridge Inspection Team Leader will use various access techniques to complete structural field inspections. They will lead or assist with team planning and coordination to complete inspections. They will develop bridge inspection reports summarizing outcomes and condition assessments completed during inspections. The ideal candidate will have taken one or more structural design classes, including concrete, steel, timber, and/or foundation design. Experienced candidates with at least 5 years of relevant bridge inspection experience are highly desired for this position. This position has a dynamic schedule, including the potential for a mix of daytime and nighttime field work and daytime office work. Travel may sometimes be required to perform inspections, with occasional overnight stays. Office work will include the development of detailed charts and technical reports to document the condition of the inspected infrastructure. Position requires physical ability to perform field inspections of in-service bridge and culvert structures, overhead sign structures and metal traffic signal poles. Physical demands include maneuvering extension ladders and handling small boats. Candidates should expect exposure to environmental hazards, such as, but not limited to, hot and cold temperatures, snakes, spiders, poison oak and poison ivy. The position could also include the live load rating of bridge and tunnel structures if the candidate desires. This work includes the analysis of concrete, steel, and timber bridges, masonry arches and culverts, from simple to very complex. If desired, there is the possibility for occasional travel to inspect bridges and tunnels for clients across the country.

5 years of experience for candidates with Associate's Degree desired 2 years of experience for candidates with Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and EIT desired FHWA-NHI Course Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges desired FHWA-NHI Course Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques preferred Microsoft Office experience Must have strong communication skills, and be self-motivated, organized, flexible, and able to work both independently and with a project team to completion of tasks Must demonstrate a personal commitment to quality, accuracy, safety, and efficiency Strong communication skills are essential to long-term success in this role A valid driver's license and safe driving record is required Must be willing to travel / perform field work Able to work in challenging environments, including working from heights, in enclosed environments, and working around traffic Safety conscious and will be responsible for their personal safety and the safety of their fellow team members Use hand tools, ladders, tape measures, and other equipment necessary for the proper evaluation of bridges Ability to quickly get up to speed on policy, procedures, and relevant software while acquiring an understanding of the company's service offerings and standards relevant to your projects An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must Preference will be given to local candidates *LI-SM1
Required Qualifications
- Requires high school diploma or equivalent. (Candidates with 8 years of relevant construction inspection experience may substitute experience for a high school diploma)
- A minimum of 3 years experience
- Proficient with MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook)
- Proven problem-solving and documentation abilities
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
