Job Description:

The Range Control Operations Specialist supports the planning, coordination, execution, and oversight of military training and testing activities conducted on assigned training ranges and maneuver areas. This position serves as a central operational link between range users, installation leadership, safety personnel, and support organizations to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant execution of training operations. The specialist maintains situational awareness of range activities, enforces range regulations, and supports real-time operational decision-making.

Responsibilities include:

  • Range Operations Management
    • Monitor and control daily range and training area operations.
    • Coordinate opening, operation, and closure of ranges and training facilities.
    • Maintain operational awareness of all scheduled and unscheduled range activities.
    • Ensure range users comply with applicable regulations, safety requirements, and installation policies.
    • Conduct operational checks and inspections of assigned ranges and facilities.
  • Training Coordination
    • Coordinate training activities with military units, tenant organizations, government agencies, and authorized contractors.
    • Support planning and execution of live-fire, maneuver, aviation, and special operations training events.
    • Verify training requirements, certifications, and approvals prior to range use.
    • Provide operational support during major exercises and special events.
    • Assist in resolving scheduling conflicts and operational issues.
  • Communications and Command Center Operations
    • Operate range control communication systems, radios, telephones, and emergency notification systems.
    • Maintain continuous communication with range users and installation operations centers.
    • Track personnel, vehicles, aircraft, and training activities operating within assigned training areas.
    • Log operational events, incidents, and status changes.
    • Provide timely updates and reports to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Safety and Risk Management
    • Enforce range safety regulations, surface danger zone requirements, and operational restrictions.
    • Monitor weather conditions and environmental impacts affecting training activities.
    • Respond to emergencies, accidents, cease-fire events, and hazardous conditions.
    • Initiate emergency response procedures and coordinate with first responders as required.
    • Support investigations and after-action reviews involving range incidents.
  • Environmental and Resource Protection
    • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and land-use restrictions.
    • Coordinate training activities around protected areas, endangered species habitats, and cultural resource sites.
    • Report environmental concerns, range damage, or unauthorized activities.
    • Support sustainable management of training lands and facilities.
  • Reporting and Documentation
    • Maintain operational logs, reports, and activity records.
    • Document incidents, range violations, maintenance issues, and safety concerns.
    • Prepare daily operational summaries and utilization reports.
    • Assist with inspections, audits, readiness assessments, and command briefings.

Here's what you need:

  • Familiarity with Emergency Communications Center (ECC) operations and a basic working knowledge of radio and telephone systems.
  • Must be adept at operating in high-tempo, high-stress environments, including emergency responses (e.g., wildland fires, medical emergencies).
  • Experience supporting military operations, training activities, emergency operations, or range management.
  • Knowledge of military training procedures and operational coordination.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via radio, telephone, and written correspondence.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and operational tracking systems.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Bonus Points If You Have:

  • Prior military service or experience working on a military installation.
  • Basic 9-1-1 Communications Officer National Certification
  • Experience in range operations, training support, operations centers, or command-and-control environments.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Range Facility Management Support System (RFMSS)
    • Training Support System Enterprise Architecture (TSS-EA)
    • Military range safety programs
    • Installation operations center procedures
  • Experience supporting live-fire, aviation, or joint training operations.

Security Clearance:

  • Secret Security Clearance

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Schedule:

  • May require occasional shift work, extended hours, or support during major exercises and contingency operations.
