Manages the daily operations of the anatomic pathology laboratory, including the secretarial/transcription staff, histology department, cytology department and pathologists assistants. Directs the operation of the anatomic pathology lab on a twenty four hour basis. Ensures that all staff reports to work promptly and accurately. Works with the staff and gets their recommendations on new procedures, ideas, instrumentation and technologies. Oversees billing of anatomic pathology specimens. Troubleshoots laboratory issues involving patient care and physician satisfaction. Constantly communicates intra-departmentally focusing on patient safety and maintenance of specimen integrity. 1. Functions as the main Laboratory Information System subject matter expert. 2. Ensures CME requirements of staff by assembling and approving webinars, lectures and workshops to meet the criteria of inspecting and certifying agencies. 3. Assists in establishing departmental objectives by collaborating with the Director of Pathology, Administrative Director of the Laboratory, Pathologists, other Managers, Technical Specialists and Staff to identify laboratory needs. Assists in the implementation of hospital policies and programs as needed. Participates in the formation of the operating and capital budgets throughout the year. 4. Oversees the scheduling of the Pathologist's Assistants, histology, cytology and office staff to ensure appropriate coverage for all sections. Makes appropriate changes in shifts to attain the highest quality work in a timely, efficient manner, thus enabling the pathologists to decrease turn around time. Ensures that these schedules are upheld by staff and all work is completed in a highly efficient and timely manner. Verifies the information and approves all time sheets in Kronos. 5. Documents job performance and sets goals with personnel during their annual performance appraisals. Arranges for orientation and training of personnel. Collaborates with the Administrative Director and Director of Pathology and Human Resources in interviewing, hiring, counseling and disciplinary actions involving employees. 6. Keeps all employees informed of organization and departmental policies. Attends departmental and hospital meetings and participates on committees as requested. Prepares, maintains and oversees the policy and procedure manuals of the department. Meets or exceeds all requirements for CAP, Connecticut and New York State accreditation. 7. Obtains pricing information from vendors if required, or delegates staff to obtain such quotes. Oversees and delegates inventory management appropriately. Evaluates suggestions for reducing costs in the department and implements these suggestions. 8. Maintains proficiency in all procedures within the section, as appropriate. Acts as Operational Manager of the department and continues technical work, as appropriate for education and experience. Resolves technical problems in collaboration with the senior staff and technical specialists. Performs and directs special procedures as necessary. 9. Identifies own learning needs. Attends inservice programs as well as outside workshops, seminars, training classes and educational conferences to keep current in technical and management developments in the field of anatomic pathology. Demonstrates this knowledge by contributing to improved laboratory service. 10. Motivates staff of all levels to perform and function at their optimal capacity. Actively promotes the quality attributes of teamwork, fiscal responsibility, accountability, patient focused care, flexibility, creativity and leadership as required by the Hospital's Mission Statement.

Responsibilities

Perform appropriate and complete gross dissection and description of surgical pathology specimens in a time efficient, cost effective manner; assist pathologists with OR consultations and frozen sections; ensure all specimens have correct source designation and appropriate charges; demonstrates competency in the gross prosection of all types of specimens, including complex tumor resections; maintains specimen integrity at all times to minimize potential for contamination and identification errors

- 3. Documents job performance and sets goals for personnel in AP; ensures that all staff is up to date with departmental procedures; keeps track of budget for reagents as well as staff salaries;
Qualifications
EDUCATION Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences with a Histotechnologist, HTL(ASCP) certification, or Cytotechnologist certification, or equivalent or graduate of an AAPA approved Pathologists' Assistant program. Masters Degree in Health Sciences or business administration preferred. EXPERIENCE 10 years experience of laboratory work in anatomic pathology with at least 5 years of managerial or professional/supervisory experience in a healthcare setting. LICENSURE Histotechnologist, HTL(ASCP) certification, or Cytotechnologist, CT (ASCP) certification, PA certification (ASCP) or equivalent SPECIAL SKILLS Excellent interpersonal communication skills to work closely with staff, patients and providers and provide assistance to Administrative Director, Director of Pathology, Pathologists and Medical Staff as needed. Must demonstrate assertive and creative problem solving ability by identifying problem areas affecting customer/patient issues and departmental quality and efficiency PHYSICAL DEMAND Lifting of medium weight objects. Intense concentration with computers and procedures. Use of sharp objects (scalpels, microtome blades) and exposure to known carcinogens (formaldehyde, xylene).
