We are seeking a Research Technician to support the lab of Dr. Harmit Malik in the Basic Sciences Division at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center site in Seattle, WA. Harmit Malik studies conflicts that occur in our genomes as different genetic entities try to maximize their evolutionary success. Malik and his team are interested in understanding the mechanisms and consequences of these "molecular arms races" and how they drive recurrent genetic innovation, from the perspective of both evolutionary biology and human disease. We seek candidates interested in microbiology with experience with molecular biology techniques. This position is ideally suited for candidates who seek research experience before going to graduate school or other opportunities. The focus of this position is to study the molecular mechanism and evolutionary outcomes of fungal-bacterial competitions.

What You'll Do:

This position will help establish a research program focusing on fungal-bacterial interactions under the mentorship of the PI and a senior postdoc. The work will involve routine handling of bacterial and yeast cultures, mutant constructions, extensive molecular biology (e.g., molecular cloning, DNA extractions, sequencing), whole-genome sequencing, and presentation and organizational tasks.

  • Secondary responsibilities include lab support activities (e.g., maintaining media stocks), ordering scientific lab supplies, and maintaining equipment.

  • Based on the interest and ability of the technician, they may also be solely responsible for the development and execution of independent, small-scale research projects. Successful projects in which the candidate participates may lead to authorship on scientific publications.

  • Handling biosafety level 2 micro-organisms, molecular biology, and routine bioinformatics will be required.

Skills You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related discipline - or equivalent education and experience

  • Specific experience with DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, transformation, aseptic technique, and handling bacterial cultures is required.

  • Ability to participate in lab meetings and presentation of data will be required.

  • Excellent communication skills are a must. Superior verbal and written communication and routine computer skills (PC/Mac) are necessary.

  • Must work well in a team of scientists working at the interface of evolutionary, molecular, and microbiology.

  • Must be independent and motivated to think, plan, and conduct experiments

  • Meticulous attention to detail is essential.

  • Ability to apply experience to new techniques and protocols and learn complex tasks with general instruction.

  • Ability to identify areas of confusion and seek help when needed.

  • Strong enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise.

  • Ability to follow instruction with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be mentored.

  • Ability to use good judgment in managing deadlines and responding to inquiries.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Biochemistry experience is highly preferred but not essential.

  • Experience working with microbiology, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics is highly preferred but not essential.
