We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, scientifically curious Glasswash Laboratory Assistantto work in the lab ofDr. Andrew Dillin at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California. The Dillin lab has broken down the barriers of metazoan aging to reveal that this process is coordinated across the multiple cell types and not merely left to stochastic chance by each individual cell. Their findings not only reveal which cells perform the coordination, but also the molecules required for communicating aging across cells types and their downstream consequences. We are ideally targeting candidates looking for a long-term commitment performing routine laboratory support work under general supervision. The work that you'll do in this role is foundational to the science being performed in the laboratory and makes this position an integral part of the team. We are looking for candidates who are committed, enthusiastic, and looking to operate as a part of a larger team.

What You'll Do:

  • Wash laboratory glassware and serological pipettes using both mechanical dishwashers and manual dishwashing techniques.

  • Sterilize glassware, serological pipettes, plastic pipette tips, and other laboratory supplies using an autoclave.

  • Sterilize and dispose of BSL1 laboratory waste.

  • Receive, organize, and inventory laboratory consumable supplies and chemicals.

  • Carefully prepare solutions, buffers, and aliquot sterile reagents for lab use Understands how to develop recipes based on concentrations of ingredients.

  • May train others in specialized tasks within their own area of expertise.

  • Specific duties may change to meet changing research needs.

  • Operate sterilization equipment ensuring appropriate conditions for material being processed.

Skills You Bring:

  • High school education or equivalent technical training.

  • Laboratory experience a plus.

  • Operates moderately complex equipment and/or performs moderately complex procedures and functions. Requires assistance to resolve more complex problems but can handle simple problems without assistance.

  • Understands the purpose of job and the general role within the work unit.

  • Ability to communicate required information and keep accurate records of work performed.

  • Ability to follow directions and perform repetitive tasks with limited supervision. May request opportunities to learn new skills.

  • Must demonstrate sterile technique when making solutions and aliquoting reagents.

  • Must demonstrate strong organization skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population.

  • Proficient basic computer skills using programs such as Microsoft Word and Google spreadsheets.

  • Strong multitasking skills and time management

  • Ability to use good judgment in managing deadlines and responding to inquiries.

  • Candidates with janitor or dishwashing experience are highly encouraged to apply.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25lb bags into autoclave vessels.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
