The Role:

Reporting to the CAO for Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro (LCMSP), the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for leading, planning, organizing, and directing Patient Care Services at LCMSP.

The CNO is accountable for the provision and quality of all nursing services at the facility level in support of Providence Health & Services System and Regional goals. This includes ensuring a strategic balance of optimal and efficient patient care; staff, patient, and physician satisfaction; and strong partnerships with organizational departments and professional groups.

With a constant focus on patient-centered care and safety, the CNO establishes and maintains systems for care delivery that promote evidence-based practice and support management of productivity targets, patient acuity, and appropriate use of resources.

The CNO is an integral member of the executive leadership team and participates in regional and system initiatives, including serving as a staff member on the Community Ministry Board (CMB).

What You'll Do:

Patient Care Services Leadership & Operations



  • Guide development of coordinated policies, care coordination programs, staff education, and collaborative care initiatives across all patient care departments
  • Oversee all patient care areas and functions, ensuring consistency of services across the San Pedro Continuum
  • Apply planning, organizing, and problem-solving techniques in managing daily patient care operations
  • Ensure availability of patient education resources to support improved patient outcomes


Strategic Planning & Program Development



  • Oversee development of the LCMSP "Plan for the Provision of Care"
  • Collaborate with regional and local leadership on strategic planning and business development
  • Support development of marketing plans aligned to patient care programs
  • Develop and oversee Fiscal Year operational goals aligned to the strategic plan


Clinical Quality, Performance Improvement & Safety



  • Identify and implement key clinical performance improvement initiatives in coordination with leadership and medical staff
  • Promote evidence-based practice and care redesign initiatives
  • Ensure systems and processes support quality patient care, productivity, and acuity management
  • Drive continuous improvement in patient safety and clinical outcomes


Physician & Medical Staff Partnership



  • Participate in negotiation and management of medical director agreements and related contracts
  • Represent executive management in Medical Executive Committee and other key medical staff forums
  • Collaborate with medical staff leadership on operational planning, problem-solving, and service improvement
  • Drive physician satisfaction through operational and clinical initiatives


Continuity of Care & Service Coordination



  • Ensure continuity of patient care across Providence and the San Pedro Continuum
  • Coordinate communication and alignment across Service Area sites of care
  • Determine service line and bed licensure changes


Documentation & Information Management



  • Assess and recommend improvements to medical documentation systems to enhance caregiver communication and continuity of care
  • Ensure policies and procedures support confidentiality and compliance with patient information standards
  • Plan integration of documentation and information systems (e.g., EPIC, acuity, staffing systems)


Leadership & People Management



  • Oversee performance management of Directors and Managers, including evaluations, promotions, and discipline
  • Support development of management capability, staff engagement, and team effectiveness
  • Serve as a resource for organizational leadership in resolving management and operational issues
  • Provide leadership support to ensure effective decision-making across departments
  • Participate in system, regional, and medical staff governance forums
  • Lead and secure engagement with system-wide nursing leadership on shared values and principles
  • Effectively manage within a matrixed leadership model


Workforce Development



  • Mentor and develop Patient Care Services leaders and staff to maximize performance
  • Assess learning needs and support development of education programs and resources


Budgetary & Financial Management



  • Develop and manage operational and capital budgets for Patient Care Services
  • Ensure compliance with budget targets across departments
  • Identify and implement strategies for cost management and resource optimization


Organizational Leadership & Representation



  • Serve as Administrator in absence of the Hospital Chief Executive, as requested
  • Represent LCMSP in internal and external leadership forums, including nursing councils and professional organizations


What You'll Bring

Education & Credentials



  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related field
  • Master's Degree required (may be non-nursing degree if candidate holds BSN)
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Ph.D. in Nursing (preferred)
  • Master's Degree (MBA, MHA, MPH, MSN, or related field) (preferred)
  • Current California Registered Nurse License (required upon hire)
  • BC-CNAA (preferred upon hire)


Experience & Expertise



  • 5 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital administration or specialty field, with experience across multiple patient care areas
  • Progressive management experience in a hospital or healthcare environment
  • Strong knowledge of nursing operations, patient care delivery systems, and clinical performance improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex patient care organizations
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills with physicians, staff, and leadership
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and decision-making capabilities

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.
