Position Overview
Accessible Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Systems (ATLAS), a research center at the University of Kansas (KU), is seeking a communications coordinator to support strategic communications efforts, with a primary focus on research writing, content development, and digital communications. This role is responsible for translating complex research and technical content into clear, engaging communications for a range of audiences.

Job Description
40% - Research Writing & Content Development
- Write and edit research-based content for web, reports, blogs, and promotional materials
- Translate complex research, assessment, and technical information into accessible, audience-centered messaging
- Collaborate with researchers and project teams to develop accurate, compelling content
- Maintain consistency in voice, tone, and style across materials
25% - Communications Strategy & Project Support
- Support development and execution of communications plans aligned with organizational priorities
- Contribute to messaging frameworks, campaigns, and content calendars
- Partner with internal teams to align communications with project goals and deliverables
- Track and assess content performance to inform future strategy
15% - Social Media & Digital Communications
- Develop and manage social media content, with emphasis on professional platforms (e.g., LinkedIn)
- Draft and schedule posts/packages that promote research, events, and organizational initiatives
15% - General Communications Support
- Assist with website updates, email communications, and basic marketing materials
- Provide editing and quality control for internal and external communications
- Support events and other communications-related activities as needed
5% - Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field
- One (1) year of professional experience in communications, content development, or related field
- Demonstrated experience writing and editing research-based, technical, or complex content for non-expert audiences as evidenced by application materials
- Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills with high attention to detail as evidenced by application materials
- Two (2) years of experience managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Two (2) years of experience with digital communications, including web and social media platforms
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) or more years of professional experience in communications, content development, or related field
- Experience working in research, higher education, nonprofit, or public sector
- Experience collaborating directly with researchers and subject matter experts as evidenced by application materials
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to communications strategy as evidenced by application materials
- Experience with accessibility principles and related communication practices as evidenced by application materials
