Class B Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Summary

The Class B Heavy Equipment Mechanic is an intermediate-level mechanic classification responsible for inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and routine repairs on heavy mobile equipment used in steel mill service operations.

This position is assigned to mechanics who have solid mechanical ability and can complete routine repairs, preventive maintenance, and basic troubleshooting, while continuing to develop advanced diagnostic and repair skills. A Class B Mechanic may assist Class A Mechanics with major repairs, complex troubleshooting, and larger equipment failures.

Class B is a lower classification than Class A and is based on experience, skill level, diagnostic ability, and the level of repair work the mechanic can perform independently.

Key Responsibilities

* Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on heavy equipment and industrial support equipment.

* Service and repair loaders, forklifts, skid steers, haul trucks, excavators, material handlers, service trucks, conveyors, pumps, motors, and other equipment as assigned.

* Troubleshoot basic mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, brake, and fuel system issues.

* Replace worn or failed components, including hoses, belts, filters, bearings, cylinders, fittings, tires, brakes, batteries, starters, alternators, lights, and other common repair items.

* Perform oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, inspections, adjustments, and other preventive maintenance tasks.

* Assist Class A Mechanics with major diagnostics, component replacements, field repairs, and complex equipment failures.

* Inspect equipment for leaks, damaged components, unsafe conditions, loose hardware, tire or track issues, and abnormal wear.

* Perform basic welding, cutting, grinding, fabrication, and repair work as needed.

* Respond to breakdowns and assist with returning equipment to service safely and efficiently.

* Communicate equipment concerns, repair needs, and parts requirements to supervisors and senior mechanics in a timely manner.

* Maintain accurate records of maintenance work performed, parts used, inspections completed, and issues found.

* Keep tools, service trucks, shop areas, and work areas clean, organized, and safe.

* Follow all company, customer, OSHA/MSHA, lockout/tagout, hot work, confined space, and site safety requirements.

* Perform all maintenance duties as required, including preventive maintenance (PMs), lubrication, and routine servicing

Qualifications

* High school diploma or equivalent required.

* Technical school, vocational training, diesel technology training, or mechanical maintenance experience preferred.

* Minimum of 5-7 years of mechanical, industrial, diesel, or heavy equipment maintenance experience preferred.

* Basic to intermediate knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, brakes, air systems, drivetrains, and preventive maintenance practices.

* Ability to perform routine repairs and preventive maintenance with limited guidance.

* Ability to assist with complex repairs under the direction of a Class A Mechanic or maintenance supervisor.

* Ability to read and understand work orders, inspection forms, service manuals, parts diagrams, and basic schematics.

* Experience working in a steel mill, industrial, construction, mining, manufacturing, or heavy equipment environment preferred.

* Welding, fabrication, torch cutting, and field repair experience is a plus.

* Must own tools required to perform job duties listed

* Valid driver's license required.

* Must be able to pass required background check, physical exam, and drug/alcohol screening.

* Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Required Skills and Abilities

* Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.

* Ability to complete routine maintenance and common equipment repairs.

* Ability to troubleshoot basic equipment problems and assist with more advanced repairs.

* Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and safety requirements.

* Ability to work as part of a maintenance team in a fast-paced industrial environment.

* Ability to communicate equipment issues clearly to supervisors and senior mechanics.

* Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, overtime, call-ins, and emergency breakdowns as needed.

* Strong commitment to safety, quality, reliability, and equipment availability.

Work Environment

This position works in and around active steel mill service operations. Work may be performed in shops, yards, roadways, production support areas, and field locations. Conditions may include heat, cold, dust, noise, vibration, uneven ground, heavy equipment traffic, grease, oil, hydraulic fluid, fuel, slag, and other industrial materials.

Physical Requirements

* Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry tools, parts, and components.

* Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in awkward positions.

* Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and industrial conditions.

* Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, respirator, harness, or other site-required equipment.
