Position Summary

African American Student Services (AASS) is seeking a motivated, organized, and community-oriented Student Success Leader to support departmental operations, student engagement, and program initiatives. This position serves as a key member of the AASS team, helping create a welcoming and supportive environment for students while gaining valuable professional experience in higher education.

The Student Success Leader will perform a combination of front desk and office support responsibilities while also contributing to programming, outreach, communications, recruitment efforts, and special projects. This role offers opportunities to develop skills in student services, event coordination, marketing, leadership, and community engagement.

Student Success Leaders serve as ambassadors for AASS by connecting students with resources, supporting departmental programs and events, and promoting the mission of fostering student success, belonging, and engagement at the University of New Mexico.

Key Responsibilities
Student Engagement & Community Building
Welcome students, families, and visitors and provide information about AASS programs, services, and campus resources.
Serve as a positive representative of AASS during outreach activities, recruitment efforts, and campus events.
Support initiatives that foster student engagement, community building, and academic success.
Assist with tabling events, orientations, open houses, and other student recruitment activities.
Program & Event Support
Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing AASS programs, workshops, cultural celebrations, and special events.
Support event logistics, participant engagement, setup, breakdown, and event documentation.
Collaborate with staff and student leaders to enhance program effectiveness and student participation.
Assist with assessment activities, participant feedback collection, and event reporting.
Office Operations & Administrative Support
Provide front desk coverage, answer phones, respond to inquiries, and direct students to appropriate resources.
Assist with scheduling, filing, data entry, record maintenance, and document preparation.
Help maintain office organization, supplies, equipment, and shared resources.
Support day-to-day departmental operations and special administrative projects as assigned.
Communications & Special Projects
Assist with creating and distributing promotional materials, flyers, newsletters, and digital communications.
Support AASS social media efforts by contributing content ideas, event promotion, photography, and other engagement activities.
Assist with website updates, content organization, and communications projects as needed.
Contribute to special projects that support student recruitment, retention, community partnerships, and departmental goals.
Conduct basic research and information gathering to support departmental initiatives.
Professional Development & Team Collaboration
Attend required trainings, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
Work collaboratively with AASS staff and fellow student employees.
Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and effective communication.
Complete assigned projects and responsibilities in a timely manner.


Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Current UNM student in good academic and disciplinary standing.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining attention to detail.
Experience supporting events, student organizations, campus programs, or community initiatives.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms.
Experience creating promotional materials, social media content, or digital communications.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
Commitment to supporting student success, community engagement, and inclusive excellence.
Interest in leadership development, higher education, student affairs, or community-based work.
