About the Position
The General Services Department at the City of Goleta has a part-time vacancy for a Department Aide and invites candidates to apply! The Department Aide position plays a crucial role by offering support as a secondary set of hands in the maintenance of City-owned properties and the vehicle fleet. Serving as a safety spotter and assisting both skilled and semi-skilled maintenance staff, this role also provides fleet maintenance support by conducting weekly inspections, managing battery charging, maintaining records, and delivering vehicles to various shops for mechanical service. We are seeking an ideal candidates who can demonstrate proficiency in basic maintenance techniques, possess knowledge of basic safety procedures and best practices, and showcase effective communication and organizational skills.

Employment offers will be contingent upon a successful physical and drug screening.

About the Department
The General Services Department oversees facilities management, fleet management, real estate services, purchasing, information & communications technology, and other general service programs and activities. The goal of the new department is to protect City assets and ensure city departments have the special resources and equipment needed to carry out their primary mission.

This is a non-benefited, non-career at-will classification. Persons appointed to positions in this classification will be classified as temporary, at-will employees, and will not gain property rights or have an expectation of continued employment. Incumbents will work no more than 999 hours per fiscal year.


Examples of Duties

The following duties are typical for positions in this classification. Incumbents may not perform all listed job functions, nor are all listed duties necessarily performed by everyone in this class depending upon business need and changing business practices:

  1. Maintains accurate and up-to-date files and records for assigned areas; develops and monitors various logs, accounts, and files for current and accurate information; develops, organizes, and maintains filing systems.
  2. Performs a variety of routine clerical duties and responsibilities involved in record keeping and reporting for assigned area; maintains a variety of records, logs, and files; aids department staff, vendors, and others in assigned areas.
  3. Provides assistance to department staff, vendors, and the general public in assigned areas.
  4. Operates a variety of office equipment including a PC or laptop, copier, and fax machine; utilizes various computer applications and software packages.
  5. Performs related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers.
  • Computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing.
  • Mathematical principles.
  • Basic principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.

Ability. to:

  • Learn the organization, operation, and services of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
  • Learn, interpret, and apply general administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform a variety of support tasks and other duties and activities of a general and specialized nature for an assigned department or division.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from coworkers, vendors, and the general public.
  • Operate and use modern office equipment including a computer and various software packages.
  • Conduct assignments with discretion; exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality of critical and sensitive information, records, and reports.
  • Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education/Training:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:

  • One year (full-time equivalent) of related experience involving departmental support and/or customer service.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • This position may be required to transport fleet vehicles for occasional maintenance; accordingly, candidates must have a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
