Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University, a proud member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association ( CIAA) and NCAA Division II, invites applications for the position of Assistant Men's Basketball Coach. The Assistant Coach will support the Head Men's Basketball Coach in all aspects of operating a highly competitive and student-centered NCAA Division II basketball program.
The successful candidate will assist with recruiting, coaching, player development, academic monitoring, game preparation, scouting, community engagement, and administrative operations while promoting the mission and values of Winston-Salem State University and the Department of Athletics.
The Assistant Coach must demonstrate a commitment to academic success, athletic excellence, student-athlete welfare, NCAA compliance, and the holistic development of student-athletes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Coaching and Player Development

  • Assist in planning and conducting practices, workouts, and skill development sessions.
  • Provide instruction in individual and team fundamentals, offensive and defensive systems, and game strategy.
  • Assist with game preparation, scouting reports, opponent analysis, and film breakdown.
  • Support player development initiatives that improve athletic performance and competitive success.
  • Assist with game-day coaching responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.


Recruiting

  • Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes who demonstrate the academic, athletic, and character qualities consistent with Winston-Salem State University.
  • Establish and maintain recruiting relationships with high school, prep school, junior college, and transfer portal coaches and prospects.
  • Coordinate recruiting visits and assist with recruiting communications.
  • Maintain recruiting records and comply with all NCAA, CIAA, and university recruiting regulations.

Academic Support and Student-Athlete Development

  • Promote academic achievement and monitor student-athlete academic progress.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors, faculty, and student support services to support student-athlete success.
  • Encourage participation in leadership development, career readiness, and community service initiatives.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.

Operations and Administration

  • Assist with team travel arrangements, scheduling, equipment management, and budget oversight as assigned.
  • Coordinate team camps, clinics, and fundraising activities.
  • Assist with summer workouts and off-season programming.
  • Support alumni engagement and community outreach initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports related to team operations.

Compliance

  • Adhere to and ensure compliance with all NCAA Division II, CIAA, Winston-Salem State University, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Complete all required compliance education and training.
  • Immediately report any potential violations to the appropriate athletics compliance personnel.

Community and University Engagement

  • Represent the University and Athletics Department in a professional manner.
  • Participate in community outreach activities and university events.
  • Assist in fostering positive relationships with alumni, donors, and supporters of WSSU Athletics.

Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Men's Basketball Coach, Director of Athletics, or designee.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Experience

  • Previous coaching, playing, recruiting, or basketball operations experience at the collegiate, professional, high school, or elite youth level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, player development, and recruiting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Collegiate coaching experience, preferably at the NCAA Division I, II, or NAIA level.
  • Experience recruiting student-athletes in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division II rules and regulations.
  • Experience working within a diverse student population and/or HBCU environment.
  • Familiarity with video analysis software and recruiting platforms.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong basketball coaching and teaching skills.
  • Excellent recruiting and relationship-building abilities.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor and motivate student-athletes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Knowledge of NCAA compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basketball-related technology platforms.

Working Conditions

  • Requires evening, weekend, and holiday work.
  • Frequent travel for recruiting and team competition.
  • Ability to work extended hours during the basketball season.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
