HJF is seeking a Research Associate I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. The Research Associate provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff and solves problems of standard complexity in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.

This position will be in support of the Military Relevant Bacterial Diseases Department, located within the Infectious Disease Directorate at the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Maryland.

  • Participates in the execution of approved animal use protocols to evaluate bacterial challenge doses, enteric vaccines, and anti-diarrheal prophylactics.
  • Performs immunological techniques, including but not limited, to ELISA, flow cytometry, and cell culture.
  • Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data, and maintaining databases.
  • Captures detailed observations on experiments.
  • Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety, policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to technical reports, publications, and presentations for internal and external collaborators.
  • Follows instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected tasks. May provide basic instruction to other lab staff.
  • Ensures the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  • Performs data organization, quality control, scientific review and basic statistical analyses using common laboratory software.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Biology, Immunology or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years' experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have previous experience with and be willing to work with small animal models.
  • Prior experience with small animal handling, accurate administration of agents, sample collection, and animal monitoring.
  • Experience with standard laboratory techniques, including immunological assays and bacterial culture techniques.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $52,800-$65,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
