Position Summary

Geffen Academy at UCLA is seeking a Learning Specialist who works closely with students, educators, parents/guardians, and administrators to support students with diverse learning needs, ensuring all students experience access to success in their classrooms. The Learning Specialist, under the direction of the Manager of Student Counseling and Learning Services, oversees a caseload of students with individual learning needs. This includes, but is not limited to: updating and maintaining records for students with Student Support Plans; providing executive function coaching, study skills instruction; and course work support; and meeting and communicating with families Additionally, the Learning Specialist collaborates with and assists educators in implementing effective research-based strategies, differentiated instruction, and the implementation of accommodations for students. The Learning Specialist is an integral member of the Student Support Team along with the school's Deans of Students, Academic Deans, and School Counselors.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years' experience as a special education teacher or learning specialist in a secondary school environment. (Required)
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and service skills with an emphasis on patience and professionalism. (Required)
  • Organized, flexible, adaptable, and able to contend with complexity and nuance. (Required)
  • Ability to work effectively with students, educators, parents/guardians, and school administration. (Required)
  • A proactive individual that inspires collaboration among colleagues and is inclusive. (Required)
  • Ability to prioritize work and juggle many projects at once. (Required)
  • Experience working with data and generating database reports, and strong proficiency with Google Docs and Microsoft Office. (Required)
  • Highly knowledgeable of current research and best practices, in child development, innovative methods in curriculum development, differentiated instruction, and be well-versed with the language around learning needs/ diverse learners. (Required)
  • Knowledge of public and independent school policies around diverse learners and ability to abide by FERPA regulations. Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal issues governing the delivery of counseling and learning services. (Required)
  • Committed to professional development in all areas related to learning, curriculum and leadership. (Required)
  • Insightful understanding of effective teaching methods for different learning styles and aptitudes. (Required)
  • Ability to effectively and systematically anticipate student and family needs with efficacy and professionalism through excellent documentation and management of records. (Required)
  • Skills and decision making in the development of Student Support Plan requires this individual to be able to understand neurodiverse learners and create learning plans to support them individually. (Required)
