About us

Superpowered. Meaningful work. Human impact. A story we're proud to tell. This is what matters to us at National Grid. In a world of complexity and unanswered questions, there is one thing we're certain about: The power of our people.

National Grid is hiring a Senior Engineer (Electrical Planning and Design), Electrical Engineering for a Hybrid local to Syracuse, New York.

Job Purpose

Underground Transmission Engineering designs projects that improve the safety and reliability of the high-voltage electric system for our customers, now and in the future. The team also supports safe and efficient operation of the underground transmission system through technical guidance for operation, maintenance, and emergency response. Our team has a process-driven and self-directed culture, solving diverse technical challenges for large, complex, multi-year projects, and supporting restoration efforts when our communities need us the most.

The Transmission Underground Engineer provides engineering expertise and technical leadership for capital projects involving underground transmission cable systems and associated civil infrastructure - including duct bank and manhole/vault design, cable selection and routing, special crossings, termination and splice-point coordination, and construction support. You will prepare engineering deliverables containing technical scope, project schedules, and cost estimates; evaluate technical alternatives; and serve as the engineering point of contact for your assigned projects from concept through closeout. Other responsibilities include support of cable emergency events, material procurement, capacity and system reliability support for other departments, and inspection and maintenance plan development.

Because the Underground Transmission Engineering team manages a combined NE/NY portfolio from a single integrated group, you will work regularly with colleagues, contractors, and project stakeholders in both regions. Your primary office is Syracuse, NY, with travel across upstate New York and to the Boston/Waltham, MA area for team meetings, project reviews, and cross-regional project support.

Key Accountabilities

* Lead the engineering, design, and execution of underground transmission projects throughout the project lifecycle, from concept development through construction and closeout.
* Develop and evaluate underground transmission solutions, including route selection, feasibility studies, risk assessments, and technical/economic analyses.
* Prepare engineering deliverables, including scopes, drawings, specifications, schedules, cost estimates, and outage plans for underground cable systems and associated civil infrastructure.
* Provide technical leadership during construction, including support for procurement, RFI and submittal reviews, field issue resolution, and project milestone management.
* Manage procurement activities for engineering services, cable systems, materials, and equipment, including bid development, evaluation, contract administration, and vendor performance oversight.
* Support regulatory proceedings through the preparation of technical documentation, testimony, and project justification materials.
* Perform quality assurance activities, including factory inspections, production reviews, and factory acceptance testing at supplier facilities.
* Coordinate project closeout activities, including as-built documentation, asset data integration, financial reconciliation, and records management.
* Provide technical support for underground transmission operations, maintenance programs, emergency restoration efforts, and asset management initiatives.
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support capital projects, system planning, inspection programs, maintenance strategies, and long-term asset replacement planning.
* Travel throughout National Grid's service territory and to vendor/manufacturer locations as required to support project delivery, inspections, and cross-functional collaboration. This will require 10-25% of the time in the Boston/Waltham MA area.Other Underground Engineering responsibilities include:
* Respond to underground cable emergency events, including initial operating instructions per system operation manuals, fault/damage detection and assessment, material procurement, and restoration oversight.
* Provide technical support to internal and external departments for the application, operation, and maintenance of the underground electric transmission system.
* Support underground distribution projects as needed, including scope development, design criteria, construction review, and data integration.
* Provide input to the five-year work plan and ten-year Strategic Asset Management Plan for future underground projects.
* Provide input to long-range inspection and maintenance plans, asset replacement policies, strategies, and programs.
* Coordinate with internal and external resources performing cyclical inspection and maintenance programs for underground transmission assets
