Core Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise union and field personnel in the operation, maintenance, construction, and repair of substation equipment, ensuring safe and efficient execution of all work activities.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards (including OSHA and company policies), reinforcing a strong safety culture and Zero Accident mindset.
- Plan, schedule, and assign work based on system conditions, operational priorities, and weather-related impacts to optimize productivity and reliability.
- Monitor and oversee substation operations and equipment performance, investigating abnormalities, equipment status, and field issues to ensure system integrity.
- Coordinate cross-functional activities with internal groups such as Electric Operations, Transmission, Engineering, and Planning to support project execution and system needs.
- Manage work planning and execution, including reviewing work scopes, submitting work permits, and partnering with planners to improve job plans and processes.
- Control and track resources and expenditures, ensuring effective use of labor, materials, and equipment within approved budgets.
- Drive team performance and development through coaching, training (including OJT), job briefings, and ongoing safety engagement.
- Lead incident response and reporting, including preliminary accident investigations and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Promote operational excellence and continuous improvement, ensuring compliance with preventive maintenance schedules, strong housekeeping practices, and effective use of human performance tools.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Master's Degree and related work experience in the operation, maintenance, construction, engineering, project management, procurement, or other support of power generation, transmission, distribution, or other utility equipment. or
- Bachelor's Degree and 2 years related work experience in the operation, maintenance, construction, engineering, project management, procurement, or other support of power generation, transmission, distribution, or other utility equipment. or
- Associate's Degree and 4 years related work experience in the operation, maintenance, construction, engineering, project management, procurement, or other support of power generation, transmission, distribution, or other utility equipment. or
- High School Diploma/GED and 5 years related work experience in the operation, maintenance, construction, engineering, project management, procurement, or other support of power generation, transmission, distribution, or other utility equipment.
Relevant Work Experience
- Work experience in the operation, maintenance, construction, engineering, project management, procurement, or other support of power generation, transmission, distribution, or other utility equipment, required.
- Computer Skills including Microsoft Office programs, Maximo/DataSplice, Engage/ePlan, required.
- Exercise independent judgement and able to render sound business decisions, required.
- Be detailed oriented, able to work under pressure and handle multiple concurrent assignments, required.
- Strong oral and written communications skills, good presentation skills and ability to effectively interact with both internal and external customers, support staff, and various levels of management and union, required.
- Must be computer literate and be able to apply practical applications in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and work management systems such as Maximo, Engage and OSS, required.
- Supervisory experience, preferred.
- Technical experience or working knowledge in the operation, maintenance, construction, inspection, and repair of the electrical transmission and distribution system to include: substation operations, switchgear installation, grounding practices, circuit breaker mechanics, and electrical distribution transformers, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications

Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment
- Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
- Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
- Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
