Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Serves as one of the principal staff administrative officers for the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management (Member of the Senior Staff). Oversees the Career Development Program (MESM, MEDS, PhD), the Alumni Relations Program (MESM, MEDS, PhD, and Intercampus MBA), and the Employer Relations and Employment Development Program (MESM and MEDS), all of which service over 200+ graduate students, over 1500 alumni, and hundreds of employers. Also, manages the Professional Development Program related to career services. Along with the Director of Development, oversees the Corporate Partners Program and all alumni-related development activities. Makes strategic decisions related to all these programs. Shares career expertise with campus departments and other universities. Advises Dean's Advisory Council members (for MESM, MEDS, and PhD) on numerous complex issues and programs to help student representatives improve the Bren School's operations and student services. Oversees the Bren Alumni Advisory Council. Provides direction for a number of school-wide events, including retirements, commencement, faculty retreats, strategic planning meetings/retreats, staff meetings, Council meetings/events, Corporate Partner events, new student orientation, receptions, and colloquiums. Along with the other Sr. Managers, handles broad-based student and employee issues. Works together with the other Sr. Managers to develop staff recognition programs and events. Sits on the search committees for executive level personnel openings (e.g., Dean, Assistant Dean, Director of Development, Business Officers, and all Managers and Directors) and takes a lead on running the interviewing phase of the recruitments. Represents the Career Development, Employer Relations, and Alumni Relations areas at all Sr. Management meetings. Develops, implements, and revises policies and procedures. Oversees budget and other resources, and works with the Director of Career Advancement and Program Services on managing the budget. Supervises a team of five staff members and provides general direction. Writes annual performance evaluations, and establishes yearly goals and development plans for each staff member. Delegates supervisory responsibilities to the Director to help with all Enterprise Systems (Salesforce, BrenConnect (online social networking platform), and systems operations). CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR MESM STUDENTS: Sets the strategic direction of the two-year MESM Career Development Program, and manages large initiatives, campaigns, and projects. Delegates managerial responsibilities to the Director during peak times and when out of the office. Works closely with faculty on a daily basis and sits on the Career Development & Alumni Relations faculty/staff committee to advance DEI within the school. Handles career development needs of MESM students. Meets with students and designs workshops and other programs to address job search needs. Directs staff in conducting needs assessments, developing handouts and materials, creating and updating the Career Development website, and developing quarterly and annual reports. Oversees staff in helping students on a variety of career-related topics, including career plans/exploration, job search strategies, resume and cover letter design, interviewing, salary negotiations, college-to-work transition, and environmental careers. Refers students to appropriate on- and off-campus resources when necessary (i.e., Counseling, UCSB Career Services, Graduate Division, CLAS, UCSB Extension, conferences, and professional organizations). Oversees staff in preparing annual placement and professional skills report for staff, faculty, advisory board members, and the general public. Directs staff in organizing and coordinating career-related activities, including job fairs, employer functions, on-campus recruiting sessions, and mentor activities. CAREER DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES FOR OTHERS: Provides job search and career development expertise across UCSB campus to help with career development programs for under-represented students (already assisted the following programs: CUEL, BEL, ES/Bren, and CEES). Designs and facilitates workshops for the Bren Environmental Leadership (BEL) Program and the Bren/Environmental Leadership (BEL) Program and the Bren Environmental Science (ES) Joint Program, providing career and leadership development support. CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR MEDS STUDENTS: Oversees the MEDS Career Development Program and works with the Program Manager to set the strategic direction and vision for the Program. Helps the Program Manager handle complex and sensitive issues. Provides general direction on running the one-year Career Development Program, and assists with running workshops, advising students, and meeting the needs of all MEDS students. Delegates managerial responsibilities to the Director during peak times and when the Executive Director is out of the office. Trains new staff on workshop design and facilitation, job search mindset, advising, counseling, and job search strategies. Directs staff in updating the Career Development website, compiling statistics, and developing quarterly and annual reports. Trains the MEDS staff on relevant career development and job search strategies. 5% Career Development Program PhD - CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR Ph.D. STUDENTS: Develops and revises policies and procedures for the administration of the Ph.D. Career Development Program. Responsible for short- and long-term planning for the Ph.D. placement program. Guides staff and faculty in delivering career services for Bren School Ph.D. students. Develops and facilitates workshops on CV writing, and counsels students on career goals and job search strategies. Directs the staff in developing website resources, providing academic and non-academic job resources, and managing the Ph.D. career resources on BrenConnect. Invites speakers and panelists to talk to Ph.D. students. Manages the staff during speaker visits. Works with Ph.D. students on resume/CV design. Works with faculty advisors to help Ph.D. students locate career positions and establish contacts in the field. Works closely with Graduate Division Career Services to provide additional on campus resources for the Bren PhD students. 5% Public Relations Marketing and Recruitment - Oversees the Employer Relations and Employment Development Program for the MESM and MEDS degrees. Develops and maintains strong employer relations and creates internship and job opportunities. Contacts new employers annually to develop job, internship, Group Project, Corporate Partner, and development leads. Maintains contact with existing employers and Corporate Partners. Directs staff to conduct research on potential employers, maintain accurate employer contact databases, and prepare employer and employment-related reports. Consults with Director of Development on target companies and future opportunities. Meets biweekly with members of the Development Team to strategize on ways to increase Corporate Partners and employer engagement. Works closely with faculty to develop and maintain employer contacts. Develops working relationships with on- and off-campus departments to develop important connections. Sits on the Association of Environmental Professionals Board as the Bren School Liaison to establish employer connections. Conducts national job search webinars to promote the Bren School to employers and prospective students. Takes part in various Dean's Council and Corporate Partner events to establish relationships with key employers. 10% Alumni Relations - Provides strategic programmatic vision for a successful and active alumni relations program. Handles complex alumni career development needs. Works with alumni on a weekly basis to help with career development questions and issues and develop employment opportunities within the alumni-related organizations. Contacts alumni to coordinate speaker engagements. Works closely with the Development Team to steward the alumni and develop short- and long-range strategic plans for the program. Provides strategic input on development initiatives and alumni giving solicitations. Communicates with the Alumni Advisory Council members on a monthly basis and engages these members with Dean's Council members and other advisory council members. Provides guidance to the Alumni Advisory Council officers. Works with the Director of Development and Director on developing and implementing alumni working groups centered around a variety of fields. Oversees tasks related to alumni database tracking, event coordination, listserv development, job announcement distribution, alumni website, video training, newsletter design and distribution, Alumni Advisory Council coordination, and many other tasks. Expands alumni services and resources by enhancing and maintaining cutting-edge online and electronic support tools to address the evolving job market and alumni career transitions. Directs the staff on new resources and tactics. Collaborates with the Communications Director to establish and maintain a career blog on the Bren website, increasing visibility for the school while providing alumni with valuable career insights. Develops advanced job search transition and pivot information for alumni experiencing layoffs, ensuring access to job search guidance and career pivot resources through the website and BrenConnect. ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT AND CAREER SERVICES EXPANSION: Expands alumni services by developing and maintaining cutting-edge digital tools that help alumni navigate career transitions and job market changes. Leads staff in identifying and implementing new career resources that improve employment outcomes for graduates and alumni. Collaborates with the Director of Communications and Marketing to develop and maintain a career blog, increasing visibility for the school and enhancing its reputation among prospective students, alumni, and employers. Develops advanced job search transition and career pivot resources, ensuring comprehensive career guidance through the website and BrenConnect for alumni facing career shifts or layoffs. 15% Development - Works with the Assistant Dean of Development to co-manage the Director of Development. Sets goals for the Director and helps the Director develop and implement strategies for reaching annual goals for MESM, MEDS, and PhD alumni. These goals and strategies are incorporated into the annual Bren School Development Strategic Plan. Directs the Director in planning, managing, and implementing career development, alumni relations, and employer relations objectives as they relate to the Corporate Partners Program, employer engagement, development initiatives, and the Bren School. Oversees the Director of Development on alumni database tracking, event coordination, listserv development, Alumni Advisory Council coordination, and general development strategies and issues. Co-leads bi-monthly meetings with the Director of Development and other appropriate Development staff to discuss potential corporate partners and career development opportunities as they relate to the program. Maintains strong communication channels between Career Development, Development, and the Corporate Partners Program. Provides training on solicitation techniques when appropriate. Works with the Assistant Dean of Development to monitor the Director's workload, budget, schedule, progress toward goals, and strategy implementation. Shares the responsibility of writing and administering the Director's performance evaluation and helps finalize the annual contract. Works with the Associate Dean of Development to determine the Director's training needs and then sets up an appropriate training program. Reviews all contact reports and acts on all relevant career development action plans. Involves the Director in relevant career development donor related events, including speaker talks and employer-related events if they will help advance the Director's goals. Provides the Director with input on relevant events to attend, including conferences, professional association events, and local employer-related events/activities. Works closely with the Director to make sure follow-up strategies are in place to effectively steward event participants and existing donors/corporate partners. Visits with donor prospects as needed and provides prospect leads to Director of Development. Along with the Director of Development, co-manages the Class Chairs each year, and provides guidance on the class gift and fundraising activities. Directs the Special Opportunities Fund (SOF) in collaboration with the Director of Development, overseeing coordination between the Development Team and the Career Development Coordinator. Engages with donors and collaborates with the Director of Development to secure funding. Provides strategic direction for the SOF initiatives. Co-leads the Corporate Sustainability Network alongside the Director of Development, engaging Corporate Environmental Management and Business & Sustainability alumni through summits, working sessions, seminars, and brainstorming sessions. Attends monthly strategy meetings with the steering committee (high-level alumni at corporations) to plan quarterly events and develop strategic initiatives.
