Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Chou, the Staff Research Associate will provide research assistance and support to his team. Dr. Chou's research focuses on innovative therapies such as antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) and chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR T) cells. The SRA will play a crucial role in evaluating the mechanisms of sensitivity and resistance to these therapies, utilizing experimental models and advanced sequencing techniques.

Department Description

The Division of Hematology/Oncology is one of the largest divisions within the Department of Medicine. The Division currently comprises more than 100 full-time faculty members, 18 part-time and/or volunteer faculty, 29 ACGME and non-ACGME fellows, 22 postdoctoral scholars, 26 non-faculty academic appointees, and 56 administrative and research staff members.

The Division's core missions of research, clinical care, and education are primarily based at the Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion campuses. In addition, faculty, fellows, and staff maintain appointments and actively participate in clinical, research, and educational activities at affiliated sites, including the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG).

    Key Responsibilities

    25 Yes

    Assists with sgRNA cloning to validate prior genetic screens, order oligonucleotides, transform bacteria with sgRNA and validate using Sanger sequencing.

    50 Yes

    Assists with bioinformatics analysis of transcriptomic and whole-exome sequencing data.

    15 Yes

    Performs validation of transcriptomics data using qPCR.

    10 Yes

    Other lab duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

SRA I

  • BA/BS in Biology, Computational Biology/Computer Science with biology applications or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in R Studio and/or Python to analyze single-cell RNA sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing, and whole-exome sequencing data
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques such as sgRNA cloning and sequencing, gel purification, miniprep, and expression of lentiviruses using HEK293T/LentiX cells
  • Experience in lentiviral generation, transduction, and validation techniques such as qPCR and/or flow cytometry
  • Experience with Incucyte to monitor cell growth
  • Awareness of different types of clinical research studies
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team
  • Ability to demonstrate interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate organizational skills; ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations

SRA II

  • In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with working in a wet lab and with computational biology experience

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
