General Summary:

Responsible for the management, planning and execution of inbound and outbound regional transportation activities. Leads transportation supervisors and directs all third-party carriers that serve the company's distribution centers (DCs) and stores. Works with vendors, inventory management (IM), third-party carriers and logistics services providers, DCs, and store leadership to maximize on-time-delivery, protect fill rate, and minimize costs. Assures performance and compliance to the company's transportation strategy for daily outbound load plans and coordinates activities with carriers to provide appropriate levels service levels and minimize costs.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

Manages all inbound and outbound orders based on terms of sale. Provides on-line exception reporting, and management mitigations and escalations based on business rules to improve in-stock and fill rates. Partners with various supply chain partners including inventory management, vendors, carriers, DC leadership, and regional transportation leadership to develop operational systems and strategies to increase efficiencies and effectiveness. Directs the implementation of transportation management system (TMS) enhancements to increase productivity, efficiency, accuracy and provide better Store service. Plans, directs and coordinates multiple project teams to ensure regional transportation departmental objectives are met and to promote the continued growth of Petco Logistics. Analyzes data to determine the appropriate course of action concerning the administration and management of budgets. Seeks to improve chain-wide efficiencies with regard to appropriate and safe staffing of drivers and all fleet and equipment issues. Communicates changes to policies, procedures and workflow to staff to ensure consistency across the network. Manages day-to-day operations of the outbound regional transportation team and coordinates carrier operations. Reviews and edits data in the transportation management system, troubleshoots, coordinates with information technology on upgrades, and trains users. Leads efforts to drive improvements in organizational performance and data accuracy through the use of the transportation management system's features and functions. Researches, evaluates and recommends computer technology (e.g., software) to improve operations. Provides supervision to assigned staff: includes activities such as hiring, counseling, guiding, training and delivery of disciplinary processes as required.

Essential Job Functions: The incumbent must be able to perform all of the following duties and responsibilities with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Plans, directs and coordinates multiple project teams to ensure Transportation departmental objectives are met and to promote the continued growth of Petco Logistics. Analyze data to determine the appropriate course of action concerning the administration and management of budgets, optimizing chain-wide efficiencies with regard to appropriate and safe staffing of drivers and all fleet/equipment issues. Assist with daily maintenance of TMS data uploads, implementation of new carriers, vendors, or lanes and execution. This entails notifying the group of systematic changes or new processes that need to be followed to ensure consistency across the network. Manage multiple associates to ensure compliance with PETCO standards and job performance. Independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes. Interact professionally and effectively through verbal and written communication with internal and external business partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensure appropriate training, support, and supervision of staff of thee Transportation Supervisors Manage day to day overview and performance of PETCO's outbound transportation team, and carrier direction, assuring performance and compliance to PETCO's defined Transportation strategy and within the annual transportation budget for the network. Subject Matter expert for all TMS operational functionality to include carrier selection, load sequencing, trailer cube utilization and store combinations, and inbound appointment scheduling, ensuring consistent application of TMS policies and procedures across the network. Integral player within TMS team for optimization and enhancements, working with DC operations, Transportation Supervisors, and TMS Super User, to configure TMS to match building operations while remaining consistent with Global Design. Lead efforts to drive improvements in performance and accuracy through better use of the functionality in the TMS application, matching the technology to the people and process. Proactively seek better technology tools to assist operations, including annual review of existing software. Educate senior management on trends and opportunities to deploy new technologies. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned or required.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Directly manage a staff of Transportation Supervisors, dedicated and contracted carriers. Responsibilities include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, mentoring/coaching, providing functional guidance, assignment delegation and follow-through, and, partnering with Human Resources, discipline up to and including termination.

Nature of Supervision:

General supervision is provided on some tasks, and incumbent uses personal discretion to coordinate and manage day to day operations of the inbound transportation team. If necessary, partners with The Sr. Director Transportation Operations to review and approve decisions having significant impact (i.e. budget, strategies, policies, etc.).

Education/Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain, or other related disciplines is required. 7-10 years progressively responsible experience in transportation or logistics required, preferably with major focus all facets of transportation management. Requires extensive Transportation Management Systems experience to include system implementation, operational enhancements, modeling and freight payable systems is required. Extensive experience in Transportation Carrier management to include contract negotiation, industry best practices to include Intermodal execution. Must possess excellent analytical, organizational and customer service skills and have the ability to work with cross functional teams. An advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office is required with the ability to learn in-house systems. Experience in Oracle or other enterprise platform is required.

Work Environment:

While most job duties are performed while seated indoors, 10-20% travel by automobile or airplane is required to visit the Main and Regional DC's where exposure to heat, cold, dirt, dust, fumes and noises should not be overlooked. There may be limited travel associated with visiting PETCO NSC or vendor and carrier locations.

Contacts:

Outside contact will be made with Carrier partners, small package service providers, brokers and truck leasing companies. Internally will have interaction with such departments as Distribution Center Operations, Transportation Department Managers, Vendor Operations, Merchandising, Inventory Management, Information Systems, Companion Animal and new Store teams, involving the exchange of information, coordination of activities, and problem resolution.
