Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Assistant Production & Operations Manager performs the full array of duties necessary to fully service the technical production, facility requirements and equipment needs of the Music Department's events, and supervises the technical support for rehearsals, performances, master classes and guest artists. At the direction of the Production and Events Manager (PEM), is responsible for many of the operational duties, aspects of scheduling, monitoring the physical plant for upkeep and repair needs, and submitting and tracking work orders for facilities repair and maintenance as necessary. The Operations Manager works with student, community, and campus organizations that use department facilities for campus events, particularly over the summer months when departmental music events are infrequently scheduled. In conjunction with PEM, participates in the training of student workers in audience safety, front of house, and stage technician skills including lighting and sound. Responsible for the distribution, management and collection of keys for department facilities. Responsible for the assignment of teaching assistant office space, student practice rooms, student lockers and department instruments assigned to student musicians. The Operations Manager is responsible for inventory and maintenance of all AV equipment, stage lighting and sound equipment, instruments, tools, and other departmental equipment. Will process and upload all performance recordings for library archival purposes and distribution. Also regularly serves as the evening performance manager for the department events, ensuring that the technical needs of events are met.

Required Qualifications:

1-3 years Experience in stage technician skills including lighting and sound.

1-3 years Experience with and technical understanding of AV equipment, stage lighting, and sound equipment, instruments, and tools.

1-3 years Experience with Event Production & Management

1-3 years Experience with Sound Recording and Engineering

1-3 years Experience with set building and other aspects of stagecraft

Proficient in Theater Operations and Stagecraft

Solid ability to handle multiple tasks under the pressure of deadlines, with frequent interruptions.

Ability to work effectively and cooperatively as a staff team member.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Basic proficiency with database software.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Solid knowledge of Audio/Video equipment, stage lighting, and sound recording.

Strong Customer Relations Skills

Ability to lead a team

Familiarity with stagecraft and theater operations

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 45% Technical Supervisor - Serves as the on-site Stage Manager for performances in department spaces and occasional off-campus venues. Responsible for running and supervising department events including performances, rehearsals, master classes, and special event lectures in conjunction with the Production and Events Manager (PEM). This includes evaluating the technical needs of performers and providing necessary equipment, instruments and supplies in support of scheduled events and properly securing all resources and facilities at the conclusion of events. It also includes specifically the responsibility for audio engineering, lighting and stage setup of the three concert halls/stages. Interfaces with the campus Office of Instructional Resources to communicate equipment repair and replacement needs for classroom spaces.
  • 20% Facilities, Scheduling, Keys, and Operations - Responsible for the daily management of facilities used by department staff, faculty, students, ensembles and classes. In accordance with University policy and in cooperation with Facilities Management, oversees all music department facilities and arranges for repair and maintenance by campus services. Variable schedule, which includes frequent night and weekend work. Must be able to perform frequent moderate lifting (20-50 lbs). Academic year hours for this position will primarily be scheduled during afternoon and evening hours, but will vary depending on the volume and complexity of events each week. The summer quarter schedule of work hours are generally weekdays during business hours. Assists in the scheduling and logistics related to the facility and music performance activities.
  • 15% Production Management - At the direction of the Production and Events Manager, assists with set building, shop operations, production administration and the training of student ushers, technicians, student sound and lighting technicians, and student house management staff. Responsible for purchasing supplies such as small props, supplies for set use, tool replacement, paint, hardware, cables, and replacement parts.
  • 15% Recording and Sound Engineering - Responsible for facilitating and engineering students' academic recording projects such as recitals, compositions, and audition tapes. Coordinates and schedules recording sessions in department spaces and, in cooperation with Instructional Development, the Kerr Hall recording studio. Also responsible for post-production of those recordings.
  • 5% Purchasing - Responsible for purchasing supplies such as small props, supplies for set use, tool replacement, paint, hardware, cables, and replacement parts. Prepares billing for department space and equipment rentals.
