Nurse Manager (Behavioral Health Crisis Service Center) - Chesterfield VA

Horizon Health Corporation is seeking a Nurse Manager for our brand new Crisis Receiving Center with 24 chairs in Chesterfield VA.The Nurse Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and managing all clinical and administrative nursing functions within the Behavioral Health Crisis Service Center's Observation and Inpatient Crisis Programs. This role ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, staffing effectiveness, and operational excellence. The Nurse Manager leads nursing staff, establishes clinical standards, manages daily workflow, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis..

Responsibilities:

  • Regulatory Compliance & Standards of Care
  • Maintain current knowledge of all applicable regulatory and professional standards, including Joint Commission, state licensing requirements, and statewide behavioral health system expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, nursing standards of practice, and accreditation requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate changes to nursing practices to meet evolving standards.
  • Support onboarding activities for new crisis team staff, including training schedules, documentation coordination, and system access requests.
  • Clinical Leadership & Patient Care Oversight
  • Plan, develop, and oversee delivery of nursing care on Observation and Inpatient Crisis units.
  • Establish nursing care standards and evaluate staff compliance through audits, supervision, and feedback.
  • Ensure medication administration and treatment delivery are completed as prescribed and documented accurately.
  • Direct milieu management and ensure a safe, therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
  • Participate in overall planning processes related to nursing and patient care services.
  • Team Leadership, Development & Communication
  • Provide oversight and direction to all nursing employees in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop nursing staff; oversee new employee onboarding, training, and continuing education.
  • Lead monthly nursing staff meetings to discuss equipment needs, scheduling, goals, performance metrics, and staff concerns.
  • Respond promptly and proactively to nursing staff issues, supporting retention and engagement.
  • Role model culturally sensitive care and ensure staff follow best practices for patient diversity.
  • Staffing, Scheduling & Resource Management
  • Evaluate and manage nursing schedules to ensure adequate daily coverage based on staffing needs and patient acuity.
  • Provide direct nursing coverage as needed during staffing shortages.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources on recruitment, staffing needs, and workforce planning.
  • Ensure nursing staff comply with departmental procedures, documentation standards, and information systems usage.
  • Performance Management & Accountability
  • Provide timely and effective performance feedback, including recognition, coaching, and corrective actions as needed (in partnership with HR).
  • Support career development planning for nursing staff.
  • Ensure adherence to safety procedures, therapeutic boundaries, confidentiality policies, and emergency response protocols.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Operational Support
  • Participate as an active member of the healthcare team and interdisciplinary committees focused on quality improvement and patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to organizational planning, evaluation, and development efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned/required by this position.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree accepted with relevant experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years of related work experience required.
  • Minimum of two years' behavioral health experience; prior supervisory or leadership experience highly preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and commitment to excellence and high standards
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Effective oral and written communication abilities
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and function effectively within teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals at all organizational levels
  • Good judgment, sound decision-making, and confidentiality awareness
  • Knowledge of code procedures and emergency response protocols
  • Knowledge of hygiene education techniques and psychiatric care methods
  • Knowledge of aggressive behavior management and de-escalation techniques
  • K CPR/First Aid training
  • Understanding of admitting procedures and intake call processes
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines
  • Skill in telephone, radio, and paging communication
  • Knowledge of medical, emotional, behavioral, social, educational, and therapeutic interventions across individuals, families, and groups preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and interdisciplinary partners
  • Ability to adhere to safety and confidentiality policies
  • Ability to practice and model therapeutic boundaries
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration ability
  • Demonstrates tact, patience, dedication, and resourcefulness
  • Ability to follow direction and organizational procedures
  • Ability to adapt care approaches to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
  • Ability to participate in all aspects of patient care management

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred
  • Experience distinguishing alcohol- or drug-related symptoms from other medical or psychiatric conditions preferred
  • Behavioral health experience in rural communities or with culturally diverse populations preferred
  • One to two years of administrative experience involving policy development, planning, and evaluation preferred
  • Experience with community coordination and system linkage preferred
