Overview

Veeco's Precision Surface Processing (PSP) division creates advanced wet processing systems for next-generation semiconductors fueling AI, advanced packaging, and high-performance devices. As a Mechanical Design Engineer focused on chamber development, you will own the design of critical subsystems that operate in aggressive chemical environments-bringing cutting-edge concepts from architecture through validation to production. This highly visible role is core to Veeco's Engineered-to-Order product strategy, enabling breakthrough device architectures at leading fabs worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Design and configure single-wafer wet process chambers and related subassemblies, ensuring robust performance and manufacturability under aggressive chemical exposure.
  • Define detailed mechanical specifications from customer requirements and integrate automation, gas, and fluid delivery elements into complete systems.
  • Conduct thermal and structural analyses (FEA) for static, dynamic, and thermal conditions; validate designs with hands-on prototype testing.
  • Create and manage CAD models, drawings, and BOMs (SolidWorks/PLM), ensuring design compliance and supporting rapid ECO cycles.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Program Management to meet cost, quality, and schedule targets.
  • Present design concepts and risk assessments to internal stakeholders and customers; participate in design reviews and phase-gate decisions.
  • Provide shop-floor support for build issues and lead design-of-experiments during prototype evaluation.
  • Ensure adherence to SEMI standards, safety codes, and best practices for design quality.

Qualifications

BS in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of experience in capital equipment design or an MS degree with 3+ years of experience is required. Experience developing chambers or components operating in chemical process environments preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient in SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D CAD) and PLM tools (SAP preferred).
  • Skilled in Finite Element Analysis (structural & thermal).
  • Familiarity with GD&T, motion components, robotics/automation, and SEMI standards.
  • Excellent collaboration, technical presentation, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Hands-on approach to prototyping and troubleshooting in an engineering lab setting.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% for customer or supplier visits.
