Your Impact

As an Interconnect Packaging Development Engineer within the Silicon Core team, you will operate at the intersection of advanced packaging technology and strategic execution. You will be a key member of the platform development team responsible for designing, qualifying, validating, and debugging critical packaging technology building blocks, processes, and tools that support Cisco's cutting-edge Silicon One ASIC roadmaps.

In this highly collaborative role, you will partner with design engineering, operations, and supply chain teams to innovate next-generation technologies, including co-packaged optics and co-packaged copper. You will also engage directly with external OSATs, Fabs, contract manufacturers, and key suppliers to drive validation and problem-solving efforts.

  • SI/PI Simulation & Analysis: Perform comprehensive Signal and Power Integrity (SI/PI) analysis and modeling using simulation tools including Ansys HFSS, Siwave, Q3D, and Keysight Pathwave ADS.

  • Test Vehicle Definition: Define and specify advanced IC packaging test vehicles designed to provide empirically derived data for SI/PI tool verification.

  • Model-to-Measurement Correlation: Provide rigorous model verification by synchronizing simulation models with physical, measured data to ensure high-fidelity predictive modeling.

  • Thermal & Material Characterization: Conduct thermal analysis using tools like TMA, DMA, TGA, or DSC to evaluate laminate properties (e.g., Tg, CTE, outgassing),

  • Dielectric Modeling: Perform Fabry Perot dielectric and Copper material characterization, matching empirical measured data to simulation. Generate and deliver frequency-dependent IC-packaging dielectric material models over temperature for use in simulation tools.

  • Reliability & Material Qualification: Conduct hands-on reliability and material qualification testing to proactively identify and mitigate risks, resolving complex packaging issues.

  • Failure Analysis (FA): Support quality investigations by performing root-cause failure analysis, executing material cross-sectioning, vacuum potting, polishing, and SEM/EDS imaging.

  • On-the-Fly Prototyping: Utilize 3D CAD (Autodesk Fusion), 3D printing, and basic machining (CNC milling) to design and fabricate custom fixturing solutions to address immediate lab measurement challenges.

  • Technical Documentation & Collaboration: Develop technical requirements for advanced packaging, build measurement-driven databases to correlate thermo-mechanical and electro-optical impacts, and collaborate with test infrastructure vendors on tool procurement and bring-up.

Key Lab Functions & Capabilities Covered

Due to the comprehensive nature of our advanced packaging lab, the ideal candidate will actively manage and perform work across three primary domains:

  • High-Frequency Electrical, Optical & Simulation Testing: Operating 120-250 GHz VNAs, executing S-parameter probe measurements, managing VNA calibration, and utilizing optical benches, fiber probes, and optical microscopy. Running advanced electromagnetic and system-level simulations (HFSS, ADS) to correlate with physical measurements.

  • Laminate, Thermal & Packaging Characterization: Performing sample preparation (diamond saws, polishing instruments, vacuum potting) and operating Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS/EDX). Conducting thermal analysis (TMA, DMA, TGA, DSC) and dielectric characterization (Fabry Perot, Dielectric Constant, surface roughness).

  • Mechanical Fixturing & Prototyping: Designing custom fixtures using 3D CAD and fabricating them using CNC mills and 3D printers to facilitate complex measurements.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and 7+ years of relevant experience, or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and 4+ years of relevant experience, or PhD in Electrical Engineering and 1+ years of related experience, or equivalent related work experience.

  • 7+ years of hands-on laboratory experience with precision measurement equipment.

  • RF/Electrical Lab Expertise: Proven experience with high-frequency Vector Network Analyzers (VNA), S-parameter probe measurements, and high-frequency calibration methodologies.

  • Materials & Sample Prep: Experience with sample preparation (cross-sectioning, polishing, potting) and operating SEM/EDS systems for failure analysis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Safety & Operations: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, independently, and safely in a lab environment with highly sensitive devices under test (DUTs).

  • Simulation & Modeling Tools: Strong working knowledge of SI/PI simulation suites, including Ansys HFSS, Siwave, Q3D, and Keysight Pathwave ADS.

  • Thermal & Dielectric Characterization: Hands-on experience conducting thermal analysis using the Fabry Perot Resonator to measure Dielectric Loss, Dielectric Constant, and surface roughness.

  • Signal Integrity & Calibration: Deep knowledge of SI calibration and test flows for both fixtured and micro-probing configurations up to mmWave frequencies (including TDR).

  • Optical Instrumentation: Hands-on experience with optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), optical benches, and fiber probes.

  • Mechanical Prototyping: Working knowledge of 3D CAD generation (Autodesk Fusion), 3D printing, and basic machining/fabrication (milling, CNC instruments) to generate custom fixtures.

  • Vendor Management: Experience proactively engaging with test infrastructure vendors to assess roadmaps, define requirements, coordinate procurement, and lead tool bring-up.

  • Multidisciplinary Mindset: A strong willingness to continuously learn and evolve professionally across mechanical, thermal, and material science domains.

Individual pay is determined by the candidate's hiring location, market conditions, job-related skillset, experience, qualifications, education, certifications, and/or training. The full salary range for certain locations is listed below. For locations not listed below, the recruiter can share more details about compensation for the role in your location during the hiring process.

U.S. employees are offered benefits, subject to Cisco's plan eligibility rules, which include medical, dental and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan with a Cisco matching contribution, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability coverage, and basic life insurance. Employees may be eligible to receive grants of Cisco restricted stock units, which vest following continued employment with Cisco for defined periods of time.

U.S. employees are eligible for paid time away as described below, subject to Cisco's policies:

  • 10 paid holidays per full calendar year, plus 1 floating holiday for non-exempt employees

  • 1 paid day off for employee's birthday, paid year-end holiday shutdown, and 4 paid days off for personal wellness determined by Cisco

  • Non-exempt employees** receive 16 days of paid vacation time per full calendar year, accrued at rate of 4.92 hours per pay period for full-time employees

  • Exempt employees participate in Cisco's flexible vacation time off program, which has no defined limit on how much vacation time eligible employees may use (subject to availability and some business limitations)

  • 80 hours of sick time off provided on hire date and each January 1st thereafter, and up to 80 hours ofunused sick timecarried forwardfrom one calendar yearto the next

  • Additional paid time away may be requested to deal with critical or emergency issues for family members

  • Optional 10 paid days per full calendar year to volunteer

For non-sales roles, employees are also eligible to earn annual bonuses subject to Cisco's policies.

Employees on sales plans earn performance-based incentive pay on top of their base salary, which is split between quota and non-quota components, subject to the applicable Cisco plan. For quota-based incentive pay, Cisco typically pays as follows:

  • .75% of incentive target for each 1% of revenue attainment up to 50% of quota;

  • 1.5% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 50% and 75%;

  • 1% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 75% and 100%; and

  • Once performance exceeds 100% attainment, incentive rates are at or above 1% for each 1% of attainment with no cap on incentive compensation.

For non-quota-based sales performance elements such as strategic sales objectives, Cisco may pay 0% up to 125% of target. Cisco sales plans do not have a minimum threshold of performance for sales incentive compensation to be paid.

New York City Metro Area:

$165,000.00 - $277,600.00

Non-Metro New York state & Washington state:

$146,700.00 - $247,000.00

* For quota-based sales roles on Cisco's sales plan, the ranges provided in this posting include base pay and sales target incentive compensation combined.

** Employees in Illinois, whether exempt or non-exempt, will participate in a unique time off program to meet local requirements.
