Job Description
General Purpose of Job: The Director of Marketing & Communications - Regional Network serves as the senior-most marketing and communications executive for University of Michigan Health's Regional Network, including University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and University of Michigan Health-West. Operating within a shared services model, this person leads a team of marketing and communication professionals who serve the Regional Network - providing strategic direction, accountability, implementation and measurement of integrated communication, marketing, PR and digital campaigns in support of regional network brand, reputation, engagement and growth priorities. This role requires proactive strategic thinking and executive counsel to drive collaboration and integration with regional system leadership and alignment with Michigan Medicine's enterprise-wide Department of Communication. This role serves as the Marketing and Communications point of contact on the regional network executive leadership team, in service to the President, U-M Health Regional Network. Team members may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position. Strategic Alignment & Execution
- Sits on Department of Communications executive leadership team, representing Regional Network priorities and ensuring alignment between central and regional marcom teams.
- Serves as the Department of Communications representative at Regional Network executive leadership meetings.
- Advises local executives on communications and marketing strategy, reputation management, growth and stakeholder engagement.
- Partners with Regional Network clinical and operational leaders to identify strategic growth opportunities and create aligned, measurable plans to meet those priorities.
- Owns governance, prioritization and resource decision alignment for Regional Network marketing and communications, resolving competing priorities across regional and enterprise stakeholders.
Integration & Resource Management
- Leads integration of people, processes, technology and culture between regional and centralized marcom teams.
- Helps transition regional health system brands to align with Michigan Medicine's master brand and shared services operating model.
- Promotes alignment with enterprise strategy and initiatives, while respecting and advocating for local community culture and market nuance.
- Helps ensure that enterprise strategies are translated into locally relevant marketing, communications and employee engagement plans.
- Ensures consistent application of brand standards, messaging, and strategic priorities across Regional Network markets.
- Ensures marketing and communications efforts are responsive to community needs and competitive dynamics.
Operational & Administrative Leadership
- Oversees local marketing and communications budgets, including planning, forecasting, and resource allocation.
- Ensures effective use of resources in alignment with both local needs and system priorities.
- Supports vendor management and local agency relationships as needed.
- Creates individual team performance and career development plans in collaboration with local executive leaders, as appropriate.
- Reinforces scope of work expectations and ensure marketing and communications resources are being used in a manner that delivers outcomes and adds value.
Local Leadership & Team Oversight
- Provides local leadership, coaching, and performance management for Department of Communication regional staff.
- Partners with HR as it relates to organizational design, talent strategy, and employee relations.
- Fosters a collaborative, high-performing Regional Network team culture aligned with enterprise values and standards.
- Ensures clarity of roles and accountability within a matrixed reporting structure.
Job Requirements
| Work Experience |
* 8+ years of progressive experience in marketing and/or communications, preferably in health care or a complex, matrixed organization. * Demonstrated experience leading teams and influencing across a matrixed environment. * Experience in budget management and operational leadership. |
| Education |
* Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field. * Master degree is preferred. |
| Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Strong strategic thinking, executive presence, and ability to translate strategy into action. * Executive level communication and presentation skills with demonstrated ability to advise and influence C-suite stakeholders, strong relationship-building across clinical, operations, and communications functions. * Proven ability to collaborate with hospital and medical group leadership to set growth targets, align marcomm strategy to business objectives, and develop measurable KPIs that demonstrate the impact of marketing and communications on volume, revenue, and strategic outcomes. * Enterprise mindset with local market sensitivity * Influencing without direct authority * Strategic agility and execution * Leadership and team development * Change management * Collaboration and stakeholder engagement |
