Summary

The main function of a Phlebotomist is to perform blood draws and specimen collection while supporting daily laboratory operations. The Phlebotomist will assist with assigned duties, troubleshoot routine issues, support workflow improvements, and work effectively as part of a team.


Position Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Experience working with pediatric and geriatric patients is required.
  • Collect, label, process, and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Properly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Review and understand physicians' orders and laboratory requisitions.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and patient information.
  • Check test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders to ensure accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Package specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Store specimens at the appropriate temperature and in the correct collection container or tube.
  • Follow specific protocols for specimen handling and transportation.
  • Update patient information and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Record maintenance and decontamination data as required.
  • Follow OSHA and DEP regulations and established safety procedures.
  • Attend required annual department training.
  • Answer telephone calls and assist with laboratory-result inquiries as appropriate.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and make recommendations to improve workflow.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to ensure efficient patient and specimen processing.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification/license where required by the state.
  • Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced laboratory, outpatient, or hospital setting.
  • Pediatric and geriatric blood-drawing experience required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication and patient-service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
