Job Title: Float Phlebotomist I

Worksite: 3913 Todd Lane, Suite 512, Austin, TX 78758

Contract Duration: Approximately 3+ months, with potential for extension or conversion to full-time

Schedule: 1st Shift, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM

Travel: Local travel within the Austin area may be required

Interview: One onsite interview

Training: Approximately 2-3 weeks


Job Summary

We are seeking a Phlebotomist I to join a patient-focused laboratory team in Austin, TX. The Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing blood collections and specimen processing while providing excellent customer service to patients of all age groups.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on phlebotomy experience, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the flexibility to travel to additional Austin-area locations when needed.

Key Responsibilities

Perform blood collections using venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all age groups.

Perform collections for drug screens, paternity testing, alcohol testing, and other specialized specimens.

Properly explain the blood-drawing and specimen-collection process to patients in a clear and courteous manner.

Demonstrate proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles.

Verify physician orders and ensure accurate specimen collection according to test requirements.

Match laboratory requisitions with the appropriate specimen tubes and patient information.

Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and prepare specimens according to established procedures.

Package specimens for transportation while maintaining specimen integrity and required temperatures.

Accurately enter and update patient information in the laboratory system.

Maintain patient and specimen logs and ensure all documentation is complete and accurate.

Process billing information and collect payments when required.

Answer telephone calls and assist with patient or laboratory inquiries.

Perform administrative and clerical duties as assigned.

Maintain and record required equipment and maintenance information.

Follow established procedures for specimen storage, handling, and transportation.

Maintain a clean and safe work environment and follow OSHA, DEP, and laboratory safety regulations.

Attend required department and annual training programs.

Provide exceptional customer service to all patients.

Travel to additional patient service centers or locations within the Austin area as needed.

Assist with workflow improvements, troubleshooting, training, and other assigned laboratory duties.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum of 6 months of hands-on venipuncture experience in a fast-paced laboratory, hospital, patient service center, or similar healthcare environment.

Phlebotomy certification preferred; state-required certification must be maintained where applicable.

Experience performing venipuncture and capillary collections.

Ability to work with patients across different age groups.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-based systems.

Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately handle patient and specimen information.

Ability to provide excellent customer service in a patient-facing environment.

Reliable transportation and ability to travel to additional Austin-area locations when required.

Preferred Qualifications

Phlebotomy certification.

Experience collecting specimens for drug screens, paternity testing, and alcohol testing.

Experience with specimen processing, centrifugation, labeling, packaging, and transportation.

Experience working in a patient service center or independent outpatient setting.

Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing workflows.

Experience working independently as well as within a team.

Work Environment

Patient Service Center / Independent Outpatient setting.

Approximately 20-40 blood draws per day, depending on location and workload.

Standing requirements may vary based on daily workflow.

Location size, team structure, and specialty testing may vary.

Local travel between Austin-area sites may be required.

Training

New hires will receive approximately 2-3 weeks of initial training to become familiar with site procedures, laboratory systems, specimen handling requirements, and workflow expectations.

Ability to successfully complete the onsite interview process.
