Job Title: Specimen Processor I / Tube Station Processor
Location: UAB St. Vincent's East Laboratory, Birmingham, AL 35235 Duration: 3+ months (potential to extend or convert) Schedule: 2nd Shift - 12:30 PM-11:00 PM, 7 days on / 7 days off Interview Type: Phone Job Summary We are seeking a Specimen Processor I to support the laboratory at UAB St. Vincent's East. The Specimen Processor will work in a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory environment and will be responsible for specimen accessioning, sorting, data entry, preparation, routing, and maintaining accurate specimen records. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, good computer skills, and the ability to work efficiently while handling biological specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue. Key Responsibilities Assist with morning rounds and all timed, STAT, and routine specimen rounds throughout the shift. Receive, accession, sort, and prepare biological specimens for laboratory testing. Open specimens and pour specimens into secondary containers when required. Verify patient demographic information against test requisition forms. Enter patient and specimen information accurately into the computer system. Unpack and route specimens to appropriate staging and testing areas. Prepare, store, and maintain excess specimen samples according to established procedures. Pack and ship specimens to appropriate testing facilities when required. Identify, resolve, and document problem specimens. Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste according to safety procedures. Operate automated laboratory instrumentation under supervision, when required. Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality standards, and safety requirements. Meet established productivity and quality metrics while maintaining accuracy. Work effectively both independently and as part of a laboratory team. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Previous specimen processing, medical, laboratory, healthcare, or production experience is preferred. Strong computer and typing skills. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment. Comfortable handling human biological specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods. Strong hand-eye coordination and ability to accurately identify specimens by touch and sight. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to follow detailed procedures and work independently or within a team. Must successfully complete a standardized color vision screening. Preferred Skills Specimen processing experience. Phlebotomy experience. Previous laboratory or healthcare experience. Experience working with biological specimens. Experience in a high-volume production or laboratory environment. Important Candidate Information This is an onsite laboratory position. Candidates should be comfortable working with biological specimens and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). The position may involve exposure to blood, urine, tissue, and other biological materials. Candidates must also be able to meet the physical requirements of the role, including lifting up to 30 lbs and standing/sitting for extended periods. | |
