Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively searching for a Structural Engineer to join our Norfolk, VA office. As the successful new hire, you will have 4 to 7 years of experience and will be capable of delivering structural engineering, planning, design, analysis, and construction service activities for waterfront, port, and maritime infrastructure projects. You will be responsible for coordinating with senior engineers and senior managers to produce calculations, reports, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and other deliverables as necessary to support large and complex projects. As part of the Norfolk team, you will work on major infrastructure programs/projects including the U.S. Navy's Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) dry dock capacity and optimization projects, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and municipal coastal resiliency projects.

As part of our strong structural engineering team, you will have opportunities to participate in interoffice workshare with our offices worldwide. Thus, growing your resume by working on projects all over the world from your local office! Our highly-technical projects include: U.S. Navy waterfront facilities, infrastructure and dry docks; large and small marinas; piers, ports and terminals; vessel mooring and berthing structures; bulkheads; and shore protection structures.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assistant Lead Structural/Design Management responsibilities to include assisting with proposal development, project set-up, team building, quality management, schedule/progress tracking, responsive client communications, meeting minutes, and coordination of subconsultant efforts and field programs
  • Attend, participate, and/or lead client meetings (both virtual and in-person at commercial, municipal, and Federal/DOD locations as permitted) including development of meeting minutes
  • Lead the development of structural analysis, modeling, capacity calculations and calculation reports
  • Lead the design and detailing for waterfront structures consisting of concrete, steel, timber, etc. Projects may consist of:
    • NAVFAC Atlantic and NAVFAC Pacific SIOP projects including dry docks, caissons, piers, and industrial buildings
    • Commercial shipyard waterfront and upland facilities
    • Vessel mooring and berthing structures
    • Piers, wharves, bulkheads and marinas
    • Breakwaters and shore protection and resiliency structures
  • Perform field investigations, periodic site visits and inspections of existing conditions and construction quality assurance (verify that work complies with contract documents)
  • Assist the designer of record (DOR) with construction support services including initial review of Submittals, Requests for Information, Change Order Requests, etc.
  • Inspect and perform repair designs for waterfront structures
  • Mentor junior-level structural engineering staff and interns
  • Contribute to the implementation of quality control and quality assurance on projects

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related, required; Master's degree in Structural Engineering or in Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis preferred
  • Professional Engineer licensure is required; with the ability to obtain in the State of Virginia via reciprocity within 6 months of hire
  • 4 to 7 years of experience designing a wide range of structural projects is required; design experience of waterfront projects strongly desired
  • NAVFAC waterfront project experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria) for operational and extreme load conditions preferred
  • Willingness and ability to perform construction oversite on local job sites
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and a valid driver's license in good standing for travel to client or job sites
  • Eligibility to successfully pass background check to secure Department of Defense DBIDS card and other badges required by clients
  • Due to client parameters, selected candidate must show (post offer) proof of U.S. citizenship and clear results of a thorough background check that may include but is not limited to credit and criminal history
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Work is conducted in both the office and the field. Some site visits will be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.

Base Salary Range:

$100,000 to $130,000 based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description.

Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the Virginia market.
