Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an opening for a Janitor. In this role the incumbent will, under limited supervision, perform tasks associated with this position, as well as other tasks as directed by management.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Cleaning, sterilizing and supplying restrooms

  • Cleaning and sterilizing offices, laboratories and public areas

  • Removing and disposing of trash including recyclables

  • Cleaning building floors and/or performing floor maintenance by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, sealing/waxing, or vacuuming

  • Dusting walls, base boards, and equipment

  • Cleaning entranceway windows, doors, stairwells, elevators, partitions and drinking fountains using necessary cleaners, sponges and/or squeegees

  • Following procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures

  • Mixing water and detergents in containers to prepare cleaning solutions

  • Notifying managers concerning the need for repairs to building operating systems

  • Requesting supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties

  • Follow requirements described in Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

  • Abide by the principles of the Safe Conduct of Research. This includes being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task and continuously learning

Basic Qualifications:

  • A HS diploma or GED

  • A minimum of two years of commercial/industrial or sanitation janitorial experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using floor buffers and polishers

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

  • Strong verbal communication skills

Special Requirement:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
