Children's National Hospital Foundation (CNHF) seeks a visionary, mission-driven leader to serve as Vice President, Major & Principal Gifts. Reporting directly to the Foundation President and serving as a key member of the executive leadership team, the VP will design and lead a best-in-class philanthropic strategy focused on major, principal, and transformational gifts from individuals and foundations. The VP will also oversee strategic engagement for board, volunteer and hospital leaders, as well as cultivate and grow international fundraising. This executive will play a pivotal role in advancing the hospital's mission through strategic donor and board engagement, innovative fundraising initiatives, and global partnerships. The VP will lead a high-performing team, oversee a portfolio that generates approximately $50 million annually, and ensure attainment of campaign goals. The VP will personally manage a select group of high-net-worth donors and prospects.

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree (Required)
Master's Degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
15 years Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in major and principal gift fundraising, including planned giving. (Required)
7 years At least 7 years of senior management experience leading high-performing teams. (Required)

Capital campaign experience is preferred.

Required Skills/Knowledge
Proven Track record of successful staff management and fundraising
Proven track record of securing $1M+ gifts and managing complex donor relationships.
Demonstrated success in building, managing, and moving a pipeline of donors and prospects.

Functional Accountabilities
Leadership

  • Working in partnership with the Foundation President, develop strategies and execute tactics required to manage and grow a comprehensive major and principal gift program.
  • Oversee the major gifts program, and evolve as necessary to deliver best in class fundraising and ensure a high level of donor satisfaction.
  • Drive strategic engagement for all Foundation affiliated boards and councils
  • Oversee philanthropic engagement for additional CNH governing boards and committees
  • Ensure a coordinated and collaborative approach with colleagues in respect to fundraising.
  • Identify and implement creative strategies, initiatives and campaigns to increase organizational performance
  • Develop and maintain best fundraising and operational practices, utilizing clearly defined goals, objectives, and transparent methods with which to measure success.
  • Positively contribute to an organizational environment where teamwork, collaboration and dedication are expected and required.
  • Contribute broadly to all aspects of the fulfillment of the organization's mission, campaign and philanthropic goals.
  • Oversee all major gift strategies and initiatives; ensure reporting and tracking results.
  • Work closely the Foundation Leadership on resolving strategic issues.
  • Staff and support members of the hospital's senior leadership team, and CEO, as needed.

Management

  • Direct the Associate Vice President of Major and Principal Gifts to ensure his/her programs are optimally performing and growing.
  • Oversee specific major gift center directors to ensure their programs are optimally performing and growing.
  • Work with the staff to build high functioning volunteer leadership.
  • Develop quarterly metrics for each fundraiser; coach and ensure achievement of metrics.
  • Model and coach creative manner of approaching issues and devising sound solutions based on good judgment and collaboration.

Fundraising

  • Lead role to increase fundraising in major, principal and international giving programs.
  • Develop volunteer leadership and engage volunteer leaders in the major and principal giving fundraising process.
  • Strategically and effectively support leadership and volunteers in fundraising, as appropriate; this includes participating and/or leading the solicitation of gifts with volunteer leadership and/or senior management and Foundation leadership.
  • Strategic design and execution of a robust plan for increasing international philanthropy and securing Hospital & Board approval of strategic international partnerships.
  • Maintain a personal portfolio of priority donors and prospects, advancing $1M+ gift strategies and proposals, and leading the major gifts department to achieve $50M+ annually.
  • This role requires significant international travel.

    The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children's National believes an individual's base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children's National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual's combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. Children's National is committed to providing a fair and competitive total rewards package to each of our employees. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
