Mead & Hunt, a nationally recognized professional services consulting firm, has an exciting opportunity available for a traffic technician to conduct field work throughout northern and eastern West Virginia. The data that will be collected will assist engineers to plan and improve roads, intersections, and transportation systems throughout West Virginia. The bulk of field work will be concentrated in West Virginia, District 5 (Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson Mineral, & Morgan counties). There are two Limited Term Employee positions available, and work can begin as early as September 2026 and will last until February 2027, or longer. This position is paid hourly, and any time worked beyond 40 hours per week will be paid at time-and-a-half.

This is a flexible opportunity for students, recent graduates, or anyone interested in transportation, civil engineering, construction, surveying, or a hands-on technical career. Both part-time and full-time applicants are welcome. The minimum commitment is two days per week, preferably consecutive days (such as Thursday/Friday or Sunday/Monday). Any day of the week is available for work except Wednesday, providing flexibility to accommodate your class schedule and other commitments

Responsibilities include:

  • Collecting traffic data and travel behavior surveys using a variety of data collection methods including video, pneumatic tubes, and in-person visits. Data collected includes average daily traffic counts, turning movement counts, and field inventories.

Travel to work sites throughout the state is an essential function of this position; a valid driver's license is required and be capable of safely operating and maintaining a company vehicle. Extended hours, a flexible schedule with ability to work both day and night shifts in the same week and overnight stays may be required.

Successful candidate will have the following:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in a comparable work environment.

Ideal candidates will have any/all of the following:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Experience reading maps
  • Situational awareness, with the ability to remain alert and work safely around moving traffic along moderate-speed highways
  • Physical endurance to comfortably work outdoors in varying weather conditions and repeatedly hammer nails into the roadway.
  • Experience using pneumatic-tube traffic counting devices
  • Record Keeping - using a phone/tablet to log data.
  • Communicate field conditions and collection effort updates reliably to the project team.

Physical Requirements:

This role involves working outdoors on a regular basis in various conditions, including live traffic environments, and requires the ability to lift and squat at least 25 pounds.
