Job Summary

Lead Medical Assistants are critical members of the healthcare team who perform clinical and administrative duties that create an overall positive patient experience. Under direct supervision, Medical Assistants assist Physicians, Nurses and other care providers staff by greeting patients, verifying information, assisting in the exam room, prepping patients for a treatment, measuring vitals, performing lab tests and maintaining patient's electronic health records (EHRs). The Medical Assistant is a key contact for answering patient questions.

Essential Functions:

  • Staff Oversight
    Coordinate orientation and assist with precepting new Medical Assistants. Provide guidance to assigned MA's related to the most effective work activities, strategic metrics, and improvement. Provide input to the annual evaluations of staff . Collaborate with ACE for teaching Annual Skills Competency and collaborate with Charge RN/Clinic RN for conducting monthly Mock MERs. (25%)
  • Patient Intake and Discharge
    Greets patients and verifies patient information, provides medication and home care instructions; answers questions, authorizes drug refills as directed; telephones prescriptions to pharmacies, assists in scheduling tests and follow up appointments.

  • Patient Preparation
    Accompanies patients to examine rooms, confirms purpose of visit, provide gowns and other items as necessary; helps patients position themselves for the examination and/or treatment, records medical history, takes and records vital signs. Administers medications as directed; draws blood, prepares patients for x-rays and takes x-rays. Communicate outcomes and report changes in patient condition immediately.

  • In-room Assistance and Laboratory Testing
    Assists during examinations including but not limited to helping physicians by handing them instruments and materials, giving injections or removing sutures. Prepares laboratory specimens; perform basic laboratory tests; disposes of contaminated supplies.

  • General Office Administration
    Answers telephones, takes dictation, records billing information for services rendered; completes insurance forms and responds to inquiries from insurance companies and other entities.

  • 5% Treatment Room and Equipment Maintenance
    Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat, clean and fully stocked with appropriate equipment, sterilizes medical instruments and equipment. Monitor the readiness of medical and office equipment; troubleshoots breakdowns and performs preventive maintenance, schedules maintenance and repair. Inventory and order medical, lab, or office supplies or equipment.

Education:

  • Completion of a clinical Medical Assistant training program resulting in a diploma or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or a registered apprentice program certificate. Required or
  • Accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license Required

Work Experience:

  • Completion of a 160 hour Externship Required or
  • 6 months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting Required
  • One year of experience working in school-age student services, preferred.

Licenses:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required and

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights, such as HIPAA
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures, and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Getting Information - Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Documenting/Recording Information - Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic/magnetic form.
  • Assisting and Caring for Others - Providing personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to others such as coworkers, customers, or patients.
  • Processing Information - Compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data.
  • Performing Administrative Activities - Performing day-to-day administrative tasks such as maintaining information files and processing paperwork.
