The Enterprise Database Services Manager at UCSF leads a team responsible for the administration, performance, and security of all major enterprise database platforms, including Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Epic's InterSystems IRIS. This position plays a key role in supporting UCSF's clinical, academic, and research missions by ensuring database environments are reliable, secure, and compliant with institutional and regulatory standards. The Enterprise Database Services Manager will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's enterprise level databases are operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the UCSF's mission. This team member will advance the UCSF's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across stakeholders. This role will execute the University's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.

The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including system and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services. Additionally, it manages databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not just for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.

Enterprise Database Services

  1. Manages the planning, design, and implementation of UCSF's enterprise database services.
  2. Oversees the security and integrity of UCSF's enterprise database services.
  3. Leads Epic capacity planning for 20+ production and non-production environments; develops hardware and database infrastructure to support critical patient care; possesses expertise in AIX, Linux, ECP tiering, storage, disaster recovery, IBM Enterprise Pools, and long-term/roadmap planning. Reviews annual on-premises, cloud, and hosted options, providing budget requirements.
  4. Directs technical work on Oracle and SQL databases and maintains UCSF operational databases, which support departmental data needs, contain PHI, deliver patient care, and manage critical financial information, including Epic, PeopleSoft Financials, Hitachi data, UCPath, historical payroll data, and patient medical records.
  5. Leads database performance tuning and recoverability for PeopleSoft and Epic enterprise systems, ensuring performance and disaster recovery objectives are met.
  6. Collaborates with IT senior leadership to ensure the reliability and scalability of relational database services in alignment with business, academic, and healthcare needs. Develops the enterprise database strategy and multi-year roadmap. Supervises short- and long-term operations aligned with the database roadmap and broader IT strategy, including budget planning.
  7. Manages the analysis of departmental needs, establishes priorities, and oversees feasibility studies, systems design, and implementation.
  8. Develops and implements effective disaster recovery plans and procedures to support 24x7 service reliability, including designing backup systems, conducting regular disaster recovery tests to ensure system resilience, and leading recovery efforts during network failures or data breaches to minimize downtime and data loss.
