The Opportunity with McKinstry

McKinstry is looking for an EHS Director to join our Modular Products team in Austin, TX. The EHS Director provides strategic leadership and ownership of the safety vision, programs, and performance across McKinstry's offsite manufacturing division. This role sets the multi-year safety strategy, builds and leads a team of safety professionals, and partners with senior operations leadership to embed safety into every aspect of fabrication operations.

The ideal candidate brings an in-depth manufacturing background combined with proven experience in safety strategy and planning - enabling them to anticipate risk, prioritize investment, set direction across multiple shops, and drive a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Additional responsibilities may include:

Safety Implementation

* Leads in the documentation and implementation of required or desired changes in the safety program.

* Writes job specific safety plans; schedules jobsite visits and safety audits.

* Controls hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee practices through site visits, safety plans, and education of all supervisory personnel.

* Conducts work area inspections and assists in personal injury investigations.

* Ensures compliance with pollution control and environment issues.

* Involved in disaster response and planning.

* Ensures full compliance of safety plan.

* Reinforces safety awareness in a manner that promotes cooperation and improved morale.

* Creates a working atmosphere that promotes openness and high level of enthusiasm and morale in the field and with the safety staff.

* Leads in developing and promoting the Safety department goal planning and department strategy.

* Responsible for leading account investigations and pointing out the lessons learned.

* Works with the Director of Operational Excellence to develop the three-year business plan and overall department strategy. Assists in the development of all department operations, trainings, and communication plans.

* Liaise with external world-class safety organizations and seek peer input on progress of the McKinstry safety transformation.

* Is committed to making McKinstry a world class safety organization.

* Embrace and demonstrate the concept that "Safety is an important element of marketing."

* Defines and owns the multi-year safety strategy and roadmap for the offsite manufacturing network, aligning with McKinstry's enterprise EHS strategy and business objectives, and builds the business case for safety investments to executive leadership.

* Develops the strategy and long-range direction for shop-specific safety programs - machine guarding, lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, welding and fabrication safety, electrical safety, and heavy-lift and material handling - and leads the safety team in their implementation and continuous improvement.

* Establishes the audit and inspection strategy for fabrication and manufacturing operations; develops and coaches the safety team to conduct shop floor audits that verify compliance with OSHA standards and company policies.

* Sets the standards, governance, and training strategy for the safe operation of cranes, forklifts, hoists, and other heavy-lift equipment used in fabrication and product movement.

* Ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, and other regulatory and industry standards relevant to mechanical and fabricated product manufacturing.

* Establishes standards and oversight for Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), and ergonomic assessments across assembly and heavy material handling operations.

* Directs industrial hygiene monitoring programs for air quality, welding fumes, and noise exposure.

* Champions a culture of "stop work authority" and embeds safety into shop daily management systems, including SQDIP boards, tier meetings, and 5S programs.

* Sponsors lean and continuous improvement events focused on reducing risk and improving ergonomics and collaborates with operations and engineering to build safety into production line layouts, tooling, and process design.

People Management

* Recruit and hire staff.

* Set performance goals and conduct performance evaluations for assigned team

* Leads, mentors, and develops a team of safety managers and professionals across the shop network, setting clear direction, priorities, and accountability.

* Serves as the senior safety advisor and trusted partner to manufacturing and operations leadership.

* Builds organizational safety capability through coaching, talent development, and succession planning.

Administrative

* Researches new regulations and developments in the field of Health and Safety and recommend changes in the company's program.

* Reviews documentation to ensure all required onsite records and reports are complete, accurate and submitted per established procedures.

* Leads in the tracking of the Experience Modification Factor while increasing awareness of the Experience Mod Factor.

* Develops and provides job orientation to crew at jobsites.

* Provides oversight of investigations of near-misses, incidents, and recordable injuries; ensures root causes and corrective actions are identified and implemented.

* Maintains OSHA 300 logs, environmental permits, and internal safety records for shop operations.

* Analyzes safety performance metrics, identifies enterprise-level trends, and reports shop and network safety performance to executive leadership and corporate EHS.

Performs other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

* 10+ years of progressive EHS experience, with substantial time in manufacturing, fabrication, or industrial environments (mechanical/electrical fabrication, HVAC, piping, sheet metal, modular construction, or prefabrication) preferred.

* 5+ Experience in management of a Safety team or related management experience required.

* Bachelor's degree in Safety or related field or equivalent work experience required.

* Understanding of applicable federal, state, local and company regulations required.

* Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Visio required.

* Certified First Aid/CPR trainer status preferred.

* Working knowledge of SharePoint preferred.

* In-depth manufacturing background - hands-on familiarity with fabrication and production operations, processes, and equipment - enabling credible partnership with operations leadership and the design of practical, scalable safety solutions.

* Demonstrated experience in strategy and planning - building, resourcing, and executing multi-site or network-wide safety strategies and long-range plans tied to business objectives.

* In-depth knowledge of machine safety, welding and fabrication hazards, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, material handling, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and heavy-lift operations.

* Experience supporting lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, operational excellence, and safety-by-design processes preferred.

* Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST) preferred; OSHA 30-Hour (General Industry) required, OSHA 500/501 Trainer certification preferred.

* Experience implementing or supporting ISO management systems preferred.

The pay range for this position is $110,790 - $190,700 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
