OPEN CALL FORAPPLICATIONS The Jackman Humanities Institute (JHI) invites applications for twopostdoctoral fellows in 2027-28. Fellows will be in residence at the JHI from July 1, 2027 to June30, 2028, joining an intellectual community that also includesfaculty researchers, distinguished visiting fellows, graduate andundergraduate students. Fellows are expected to reside in Torontoand contribute to the JHIs programming and activities. This is an open call for scholars inthe humanities or qualitative social sciences. Eligibility Open to applicants who hold a doctoral degree in a humanities orhumanistic social science discipline, earned between July 1, 2024and June 30, 2027 Funding and Benefits The postdoctoral fellowship is an award of $75,000 CAD plusbenefits. Responsibilities and Expectations As a residential fellow, the JHI Postdoctoral fellows will Relocate to a dedicated office at the JHI for the fellowshipperiod Application Components All applicants must complete the online application form and uploadthe following documents as a single PDF: You will also be asked to provide abiography and project summary (maximum 100 words each). If you areselected for a fellowship, these texts will be used for publicityand reporting. Selection Criteria Applications will be evaluated by anadjudication committee based on the: Important Dates Applications can be submitted as of Tuesday, August 18,2026 Frequently Asked Questions Eligibility I intend to defend my thesis before July 1, 2027, but I am not sure whether my graduation will be in June 2027 or Fall 2027. Am I still eligible? Yes. However, if you receive thisfellowship, the offer will be contingent on you defending yourdissertation before July 1, 2027 and providing a letter from yourinstitution confirming that you have done so. I graduated from my doctoralprogram in June 2024. Am I eligible to apply? No. Applicants who graduated before July 1, 2024 are not eligible. This fellowship has a three-yeareligibility window that is calculated from the fellowship startdate, which is July 1, 2027. Funding and Benefits How will the JHI support me if my application issuccessful? $75,000 CAD award plus benefits Is any funding beyond theaward for this position available for travel, moving expenses, orresearch? The JHI provides $75,000 CAD plusbenefits to successful applicants for these fellowships. All costsbeyond that, associated with the fellowship, are the responsibilityof the individual fellows. You are welcome to apply for up to twoone-semester courses of sessional teaching in any unit appropriateto your field of doctoral study. Your teachingschedule cannot conflict with your responsibilities at the JHI,including the weekly Circle of Fellows Seminar (which meets midday,Thursdays). Can the JHI assist me withapplying for my Visa or Work Permit? No. For applicants who are not Canadian citizens, it is yourresponsibility to apply for the documents you will require to enterand reside in Canada in a timely manner. What is the difference between the project proposal and theproject summary? The proposal is the primary documentof your application. It outlines what you plan to research and howyou will do that. It explains why and how this research reflectsthe criteria for the fellowship. The description is a synopsis; ifyour application is successful, it will be used for publicity andannouncements. May I provide all or part ofmy application in a language other than English? Application materials will be considered in English or French Can I correct an error in myapplication before I submit it? Yes. Until the application deadline has passed, you can choose to SAVE your application. You will be given a code for re-entry.Record this code and use it to go back into your application. The identity ofselection committee members and the process of selection areconfidential but involve consultation with members of the JHI Advisory Board and incoming faculty research fellows.
