Coding Specialist 3-Neurosurgery

Accurate coding is critical to the financial health, compliance, and operational success of a high-performing academic health system. This opportunity allows an experienced neurosurgery coding professional to contribute directly to revenue integrity, regulatory compliance, and the support of exceptional patient care through expert coding practices.

As a fully remote Coding Specialist 3, you will serve as a subject matter expert in neurosurgery professional fee coding, independently reviewing complex clinical documentation and assigning accurate codes for surgical procedures, office-based services, and Evaluation & Management encounters. This role offers the opportunity to apply advanced coding expertise while partnering with providers and revenue cycle professionals to ensure coding accuracy, quality outcomes, and compliance.

The Role

In this highly specialized position, you will utilize your expertise in neurosurgery coding to accurately translate complex clinical services into compliant medical codes while supporting reimbursement, reporting, and revenue cycle performance. Working remotely, you will analyze provider documentation, resolve coding challenges, and help ensure the integrity of coded data across a variety of patient encounters.

Key responsibilities include:

• Independently reviewing and coding complex neurosurgery surgical procedures, office-based procedures, and Evaluation & Management encounters.
• Applying advanced knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, modifier assignment, NCCI edits, global surgical package rules, and payer-specific requirements.
• Interpreting provider documentation to accurately capture services rendered and ensure complete, compliant code assignment.
• Identifying documentation gaps, coding risks, and compliance concerns while determining when provider clarification is needed.
• Supporting coding quality through research and application of coding guidelines, LCDs, NCDs, payer policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Utilizing tools such as Epic, EncoderPro, charge review processes, and work queue management systems to maintain coding accuracy and productivity.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience: 5+ years of relevant coding experience required. Neurosurgery experience preferred.

Licensure: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
