What to Expect
The Structural QC Inspector supports the Structural QC Lead by verifying that all assigned
structural-related activities (e.g., pre-installation verification testing, welding, coating, support
installation, field installation, etc.) conform to engineering designs, codes, regulations, and Tesla
standards. This position performs field inspections and QC documentation under the direction of
the Structural QC Lead, using solid technical judgment and practical problem-solving to help
achieve project quality objectives
What You'll Do
- Inspect structural steel fabrication, erection, and installation (e.g. pipe racks, skids, platforms, stairs, handrails, supports) in accordance with specifications, drawings, and applicable codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, AISC 360, OSHA 1926 Subpart R)
- Perform visual weld inspections, fit-up, joint prep, preheat/interpass, WPS/PQR compliance, filler materials, and completed welds meet acceptance criteria
- Witness and coordinate NDE activities (UT, MT, PT, RT) on structural welds and base materials, verifying methods, procedures, and technician certifications meet project and code requirements
- Inspect high-strength bolted connections (snug-tightening, pre-tension, and turn-of-nut,DTI); verify bolt grade, size, and installation in accordance with AISC 360, RCSC, and project specifications
- Verify material traceability and PMI for steel members, connections, and weld consumables; confirm MTRs, heat numbers, and material markings match project requirements
- Identify, document, and track structural nonconformances; coordinate with the Structural QC Lead, engineering, and construction to ensure root cause analysis is performed and corrective actions are verified prior to work continuation
- Maintain inspection records, weld logs, NDE reports, bolt installation records, and material traceability documentation;support ITP hold/witness point signoffs and turnover packages for Quality Assurance team acceptance
What You'll Bring
- Minimum of 3 years' experience as a structural QC inspector on large-scale industrial projects
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret discipline-specific technical documents, communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors, and support resolution per direction of the Lead
- Possesses solid knowledge of quality control program requirements and key construction codes (e.g., AWS, AISC 360, RCSC); proficient with inspection tools and testing methods(e.g., weld gauges, bridge cam gauges, hi-lo gauges, calipers, Skidmore-Wilhelm bolt tension calibrator); working knowledge of NDE testing methods and procedures (UT, MT, PT, RT)
- Demonstrate proficient problem-solving skills and the ability to present issues to the Structural QC Lead along with recommended corrective action solutions
- Possesses a working knowledge of quality management principles and the ability to apply them during construction and testing phases of the project in accordance with the project quality plan and applicable codes and standards
- Ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment, meet inspection schedules, follow direction from the Structural QC Lead, and collaborate with crews and project teams while maintaining attention to detail and specification compliance
