Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology Manager and/or Chief Technologist and the direction of staff technologists, the Radiology Assistant supports patient care activities within the Diagnostic Imaging Department. Responsibilities include both direct and indirect patient care functions that help ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care for patients and their families.

All duties are performed according to departmental and organizational policies and procedures. Team members are expected to demonstrate exceptional customer service and uphold Yale New Haven Health System's Core Success Factors in every interaction.

To support departmental staffing needs, staff may be assigned to work at any Yale New Haven Health MRI location, regardless of regularly assigned work location.


Responsibilities

Patient Preparation & Intake

  • Conduct routine patient interviews and screenings following established procedures
  • Collect and document required patient and demographic information
  • Assist technologists in assessing and preparing patients for diagnostic imaging procedures

Patient Care Support

  • Support the preparation and setup of patients for radiology procedures
  • Prepare supplies and equipment needed for imaging exams and procedures
  • Help facilitate efficient patient flow throughout the department

Medical Records & Documentation

  • Access and locate patient records within electronic medical record systems
  • Enter and maintain accurate patient demographic and clinical information in IDX and PACS systems
  • Scan and attach required documentation to patient records
  • Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards

Coordination & Communication

  • Collaborate with patients, families, technologists, nurses, and providers to ensure a positive patient experience
  • Organize and prioritize patient care responsibilities based on exam schedules and departmental needs
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with all stakeholders

Environmental & Operational Support

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of imaging rooms and work areas
  • Restock supplies, linens, and equipment as needed
  • Properly handle soiled laundry and maintain a safe patient care environment

Inventory Management

  • Monitor and replenish imaging and patient care supplies
  • Follow established par levels and place supply orders in a timely manner

Professional Development

  • Maintain clinical competency within assigned responsibilities
  • Complete all required departmental and mandatory education programs
  • Participate in department initiatives that promote teamwork and operational excellence

Patient Experience Excellence

  • Deliver exceptional service that contributes to departmental patient satisfaction goals
  • Introduce yourself and explain your role and procedures clearly to patients and families
  • Address patient questions and comfort concerns before and after procedures
  • Promote a patient- and family-centered care experience in every interaction

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of a Certified Nurse Aide program, patient care training program, or current enrollment in an accredited Radiology program or related healthcare field preferred
  • Medical terminology and computer coursework preferred

Experience

  • One to two years of relevant patient care experience; such as current enrollment in a Radiology program, OR
  • Graduate of a certified healthcare training program including but not limited to:
  • Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)
  • Phlebotomy
  • EKG/EEG Technician
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Operating Room Technician
  • Associate degree in a healthcare-related field

Licensure

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification preferred
  • Must obtain BLS/CPR certification within six months of hire if not currently certified

Required Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with patients, families, peers, and supervisors
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • Ability to learn electronic medical record and patient information systems
  • Basic data entry and retrieval skills
  • Ability to learn patient screening and patient care procedures according to established protocols
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to provide age-appropriate care to patients across the lifespan

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks requiring endurance, mobility, and dexterity
  • Consistent use of proper body mechanics
