About the Job

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct epidemiological research related to swine production, with a particular focus on biosecurity. The position will involve traveling to commercial swine farms to assess biosecurity practices and collect data, conducting data analyses, supporting manuscript preparation for other ongoing epidemiological projects within the group, and contributing to the group's grant development and funding efforts.

Job Responsibilities

50%- Research and Technical Support in Biosecurity Assessment

  • Develop biosecurity assessment surveys, conduct biosecurity assessments on swine farms, and analyze and report data.
  • This will require traveling to domestic destinations.

10%- Research Data Management

  • Generate and organize research data for future projects.

10%- Research Collaboration and Scientific Communication

  • Collaborate with the PI in the generation and testing of research hypotheses and data analysis.
  • Write papers, grants, reports, and prepares presentations and lectures.

10%- Professional Development and Scientific Engagement

  • Attend, participate, or present at laboratory meetings, seminars, graduate and undergraduate lectures, and conferences as needed.

10%- Administrative and Project Coordination

  • Perform miscellaneous office duties as assigned by the PI, including, but not limited to, the organization and coordination of meetings and projects.

10%- Support with Ongoing Lab Activities

  • Provide data collection and data analysis support with ongoing lab projects.
  • This may involve traveling to domestic destinations, as well as the use of statistical analysis.

Location and Work Environment

  • This is an in-person position. 385 AnSc Vet Med, 1988 Fitch Ave, St Paul, MN

Work Schedule

  • The regular schedule is from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays.
  • Travel may require Saturday/Sunday, during which the candidate may be presenting research output at a scientific conference or traveling to/from a farm to conduct biosecurity assessments.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • PhD, DVM, or equivalent is required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Background in swine disease epidemiology.
  • Demonstrated record of academic publishing and data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting research on or managing commercial swine farms, particularly if this experience involves swine farm biosecurity implementation or assessment.
  • Proficiency in statistical programming such as Stata, R, or Python will be strongly considered.
About the Department

The Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) department specializes in population and individual animal medicine focusing on large animals' health and production, biomedical science, and ecosystem and public health. Our faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans. Faculty provide clinical instruction in medicine, diseases, surgery, production medicine, public health and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and are home to faculty in clinics, epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. Faculty members provide clinical services for animals, diagnostic services to animal owners, and continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners.

Teaching

The Veterinary Population Medicine Department provides clinical instruction in medicine, surgery, production medicine, diagnostics and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and is home to faculty in epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. The department provides residency training in large animal medicine, surgery, pathology, and veterinary public health and preventive veterinary medicine and works with students in the Veterinary Sciences, and Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate programs.

Research

Faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, eliminate and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.

Service

Faculty members provide clinical services for animals in the Leatherdale Equine Center and Large Animal Hospital, as well as diagnostic services to animal owners through the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. They consult with producers and veterinarians in the community, provide continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners, and play an active role in the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, John Fetrow Dairy Education Center, Equine Center, and the Swine Disease Eradication Center.

Pay Rate: $62,232.00 Annually
