Position Overview

We are seeking a Phlebotomist I to support an IOP location in Matthews, NC. The selected candidate will work as part of a team and perform blood specimen collections for a diverse patient population.

The position will involve approximately 25-35 patient draws per day and requires experience working with both pediatric and geriatric patients. The ideal candidate will have strong venipuncture skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to provide professional customer service in a fast-paced clinical environment.

This is a contract-to-possible-permanent opportunity. Conversion to a LabCorp full-time employee may be available based on performance, business needs, and eligibility.

Key Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture and blood specimen collection accurately and efficiently.

Perform approximately 25-35 patient draws per day.

Work with pediatric and geriatric patients.

Properly explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients in a clear and courteous manner.

Demonstrate proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles.

Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes.

Verify test requisitions and computer-generated labels for accuracy.

Properly label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.

Package specimens for transportation.

Store specimens at the appropriate temperature and in the correct collection containers/tubes.

Follow established protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transportation.

Update and maintain accurate patient information.

Record maintenance information and perform equipment decontamination as required.

Fully understand and follow physician orders.

Answer telephone calls and assist with laboratory-related inquiries.

Read laboratory results to satisfy appropriate inquiries.

Follow OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety procedures.

Attend required annual department training.

Work collaboratively with team members to support efficient laboratory operations.

Provide professional and courteous customer service to patients.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum of 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

Strong blood-drawing and specimen-collection skills.

Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients.

Proficiency with straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

Ability to properly label, process, package, and transport specimens.

Ability to accurately follow laboratory requisitions and physician orders.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Strong customer service and communication skills.

Valid state phlebotomy certification where required by applicable state regulations.

Preferred Skills

Pediatric phlebotomy experience.

Geriatric phlebotomy experience.

Experience handling a high daily volume of blood draws.

Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.

Excellent patient/customer service skills.

Experience working in a hospital or fast-paced laboratory environment.

Compliance Requirements

Negative THC screening required.

Color vision is required.

Flu vaccination will be required once flu season begins.

COVID-19 vaccination is not required.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended but not mandatory; candidates may decline and complete the appropriate declination form.

Successful completion of applicable background and onboarding requirements is required.
