Job Description

Summary

The main function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, update patient information, and perform other assigned duties.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Properly explain, in a clear and courteous manner, the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection, such as urine or fecal collection, as required.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understand physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperature.
  • Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and accurately label specimens.
  • Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols deemed necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department training.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and make workflow recommendations as required.
  • Participate in training activities as assigned.



Work Environment & Additional Details

  • Daily Draw Volume: Approximately 25-30 draws per day; volume may vary.


Work Environment: OBGYN IOP Office.

  • Specialty: Preferably knowledge or experience in an OBGYN setting.
  • Work Arrangement: Worker will work alone.
  • Standing Requirements: Standing will vary throughout the day. A chair is available; the worker will primarily stand while performing blood draws.
  • Training: 1 week of onsite training at the start of the role.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where the employee will be employed, as required in some states.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of experience.
