Dept of Surgery, Division of Research, Data Science Institute - Assistant Professor

The Medical College of Wisconsin is pleased to announce a search for a full-time academic surgeon with a clinical appointment in the Department of Surgery and a joint faculty appointment in the Data Science Institute (DSI). Candidates from across general surgery and its surgical subspecialties are encouraged to apply. The candidate's clinical divisional home will be aligned with their training and area of surgical expertise. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to academic surgery and an established or emerging research program at the intersection of surgery, healthcare, and data science.

Areas of interest may include artificial intelligence and machine learning, clinical informatics, predictive analytics, large language models and generative AI, computer vision, multimodal data science, clinical decision support, implementation and evaluation of AI-enabled technologies, and other computational approaches to improving surgical care and outcomes. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, collaborative research program that leverages the clinical and data resources of MCW and its health system partners. The position offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across the Department of Surgery, DSI, and the broader MCW research enterprise, with the goal of developing, evaluating, and translating data-driven approaches to improve surgical care.

Applicants must have an MD or equivalent degree and be Board Certified/Board Eligible by the American Board of Surgery. Academic rank and compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The candidate's clinical practice will be based at Froedtert Hospital and across the expanding clinical enterprise of the Medical College of Wisconsin, with opportunities for practice at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to research and programmatic development, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, grant submissions or funding, development of data-driven clinical or research programs, and/or other relevant scholarly accomplishments.

• Clinical Practice: The successful candidate will maintain an active surgical practice within the Department of Surgery, aligned with their clinical training and subspecialty expertise. Clinical activities will be based primarily at Froedtert Hospital and may extend across the Froedtert ThedaCare Health clinical enterprise and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. Approximately 45% effort will be dedicated to clinical care.

• Research and Data Science: The faculty member will hold a joint appointment in the MCW Data Science Institute and will have opportunities to collaborate across surgery, data science, informatics, engineering, and the broader clinical and research enterprise. Areas of emphasis may include artificial intelligence and machine learning, generative AI and large language models, multimodal data science, clinical informatics, predictive analytics, computer vision, human-AI interaction, and the implementation and evaluation of AI-enabled technologies in healthcare. Approximately 50% protected effort will be dedicated to developing an independent, externally funded research program at the intersection of surgery and data science.

• Teaching: Your teaching focus will be in both the Department of Surgery and Data Science Institute. This will include participation in the teaching of medical students, surgical residents, fellows and other trainees while attending on the inpatient service at FMLH and during outpatient clinical activities. For the Data Science Institute, this will include graduate coursework, seminars, and mentorship of trainees.

• Leadership and Program Development: The position provides an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of surgical data science and artificial intelligence at MCW. Depending on the candidate's expertise and career trajectory, opportunities may include leadership of collaborative research initiatives and development of programs focused on areas such as human-AI interaction, clinical AI evaluation, and translation of data science into surgical practice.

• Administration/Service: You will be expected to participate, to the extent that you may be reasonably called upon, in administrative and/or service functions of the Department or hospital or on Department, Institute or MCW committees.

Your practice assignments and the allocations of your efforts in the below areas may be changed from time to time by the Chair of the Department to meet the health care needs of the patients of MCW's practice and to meet the missions of MCW for excellence in education, research, patient care and community service.

The MCW Data Science Institute is focused on advancing data science as a scientific discipline and enabling data-intensive research across MCW and its health system partners. Led by William R. Hogan, MD, MS, the DSI brings together expertise spanning artificial intelligence, biomedical and clinical informatics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, genomics and other multi-omics disciplines, geospatial analysis, and large-scale health data science. The Institute provides an interdisciplinary environment for developing novel computational methods and translating them into biomedical research and clinical care.
